Remeron SolTab Information

Remeron SolTab (Mirtazapine) is primarily used in adults to treat major depressive disorder. Depression refers to a mood disorder that involves persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, accompanied by a loss of interest or pleasure and disturbances in sleep, appetite, or energy levels. Remeron Soltab is usually prescribed after a trial of cognitive behavioral therapy sessions and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It belongs to the class of atypical antidepressants called tetracyclic antidepressants, more specifically, the noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant class.

Mirtazapine works uniquely compared to the more common selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (e.g, fluoxetine and sertraline). Instead of blocking the reuptake of neurotransmitters like many common antidepressants, mirtazapine works by essentially blocking specific receptors in the brain. These receptors include alpha-2 adrenergic receptors and serotonin receptors (5-HT2 and 5-HT3). This mechanism enhances the release of key mood-regulating neurotransmitters, including norepinephrine and serotonin.

Another effect that sets mirtazapine apart is its strong ability to block histamine H1 receptors, which is what makes it quite sedating. This is why mirtazapine can also be used in the treatment of insomnia and anxiety disorders, such as panic attacks and social anxiety disorder. Mirtazapine tablets may be used in the treatment of fibromyalgia and posttraumatic stress disorder (in combination with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). It may also be used to prevent episodes of chronic tension-type headaches. While some people may notice an improvement in symptoms like sleep within a week or two, the full therapeutic effect of mirtazapine for depression often takes about 2 to 4 weeks.

Remeron Soltab Side Effects

As with any medication, mirtazapine can cause a range of side effects, some of which are more common and others that are serious but rare. The common side effects to be aware of include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, increased appetite, weight gain, nightmares, constipation, and trouble sleeping.

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, hives, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat;
• Low Sodium in the blood with symptoms like confusion, seizures, headache;
• Liver problems, with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, dark urine, and pale stools;
• Mania with symptoms like decreased need for sleep, hallucinations, elevated or irritable mood, racing thoughts, aggressive behaviors;
• Muscle breakdown with symptoms like aching or tender muscles, dark "tea-coloured" urine;
• Neuroleptic malignant syndrome with symptoms like confusion, reduced consciousness, high fever, or muscle stiffness;
• Pancreatitis with symptoms like abdominal pain on the upper left side, back pain, nausea, fever, chills, rapid heartbeat, swollen abdomen;
• Serotonin toxicity with symptoms like delirium, agitation, muscle rigidity, movement difficulty;
• Signs of infection such as sore throat, chills, fever, and mouth sores

As with many other antidepressants, there is an increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior, especially in children, adolescents, and young adults (under 25), particularly when first starting this medication or when the dose is changed. Therefore, it is essential to monitor individuals taking this medication, particularly children and young adults, for any unusual changes in behavior.

Remeron Soltab Precautions

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to mirtazapine, other ingredients in Remeron Soltab, or other similar medicines. Before you start taking this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any prior or current medical conditions, including the following:
• Blood cell disorders such as anemia or low platelet count;
• Diabetes;
• Eye problems, particularly glaucoma;
• Heart disease;
• High blood cholesterol;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Low blood pressure;
• Seizure disorders;
• Stroke;
• Suicidal thoughts and ideation, including a previous history of suicidal attempts;
• Urinating difficulties

Taking mirtazapine may cause dizziness and drowsiness, so it's best to avoid tasks that require sharp focus until you know how it affects you. Also, be careful with alcohol, as it can increase the sedative and other unwanted side effects of the medication. Stopping the medication abruptly can cause side effects, such as dizziness, agitation, and confusion. Consult your doctor before discontinuing this medication. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as phenelzine and tranylcypromine must be discontinued at least 14 days before starting mirtazapine to minimize the risk of serotonin syndrome, a serious adverse effect. You should also tell your doctor about any other medicines you take, including herbal solutions, before using Remeron Soltab to avoid drug interactions.

Mirtazapine has not been convincingly shown to affect the development of the fetus in various studies. However, it's always best to consult your doctor before taking this medication when pregnant. It's also worth discussing whether you can continue breastfeeding while on mirtazapine. This medication isn't suitable for use in people under 18 years of age because its safety and effectiveness haven't been established in this age group. Caution should be exercised when using mirtazapine in older adults, as they may be more likely to experience its potential side effects. Remeron Soltab is available in disintegrating tablet forms, as opposed to the standard mirtazapine tablet forms. It is typically prescribed for individuals who have swallowing difficulties who may not be able to take standard mirtazapine tablets. Take once daily as directed by your doctor, usually in the evening before bedtime, since it can cause drowsiness. Place the disintegrating tablet on your tongue, where it quickly dissolves without the need for water to swallow. Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children. Leave the orally disintegrating tablets in the original packaging until you are ready to take a dose.
