What is Renvela (Sevelamer Carbonate) Used For?

Renvela (Sevelamer Carbonate) is a phosphate binder used to control high phosphorus levels in the blood, a condition called hyperphosphatemia, in adults and children six years of age and older with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis.

Sevelamer carbonate is a non-absorbed, non-calcium phosphate binder, which distinguishes itself from some older binders containing calcium or aluminum. When swallowed with a meal, sevelamer travels into your gastrointestinal tract, where it attracts and binds to phosphate released from the food you just ate. The body cannot absorb the newly formed, insoluble sevelamer-phosphate complex through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. Instead, this complex passes through the digestive system and is excreted from the body via the feces.

This process prevents the body from absorbing excess phosphate and keeps the blood phosphate concentrations within a safer range. It also, in turn, prevents some of the long-term complications of severe renal disease, specifically renal bone disease. Be sure always to take this medication as prescribed by your doctor. For full information about its use, check out its product monograph.

What Side Effects Can Renvela or Generic Sevelamer Carbonate Cause?

Like all medications, sevelamer can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Some common mild side effects of this medication include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, indigestion, abdominal pain, constipation, or heartburn. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any of these symptoms. Warnings

Do not use this medication if you have:
• Allergic reaction to sevelamer, or any other ingredients in Renvela;
• Bowel obstruction;

Also, before you start taking this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor if you have certain conditions such as electrolyte imbalance (such as low blood calcium or bicarbonate levels), difficulty swallowing, or pre-existing gastrointestinal conditions, such as severe constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, active stomach ulcers, major prior gastrointestinal surgeries, and severe motility disorders such as gastroparesis.

Renvela tablets should never be crushed, chewed, or broken. If you have swallowing difficulties or an active gag reflex, you should use the oral powder for suspension formulation instead of the large tablets, as these tablets can swell rapidly when taken with water and potentially cause a choking hazard if chewed or not swallowed whole. Your doctor will regularly monitor serum phosphorus, calcium, bicarbonate, and chloride levels while taking this medication.

Do not use the following medications along with sevelamer due to the risk of drug interactions:
• Ciprofloxacin;
• Erdafitinib;
• Intravenous phosphate;

Also, closer monitoring is advised when certain medications like cyclosporine, tacrolimus, and levothyroxine are used along with Renvela. Therefore, it is essential to inform your doctor about all the medicines, including herbal pills, that you are taking before using this medication to prevent drug interactions.

This medication may be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding under your doctor’s supervision, as it is not absorbed into the bloodstream; it is not expected to affect the fetus. Do not use this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding; it can deplete the blood levels of fat-soluble vitamins and folic acid in the body. Therefore, consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as you may need a vitamin supplement along with this medication. Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.
