Restasis (Cyclosporine) Information
Restasis, which contains the active ingredient cyclosporine, is a prescription eye drop used to increase natural tear production in patients with tear flow suppressed by inflammation associated with chronic dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). Unlike artificial tears, which provide temporary moisture, Restasis is a long-term treatment designed to address the underlying inflammatory cycle of dry eye disease.
The mechanism of action involves acting as a partial immunomodulator. It calms inflammation in the tear glands and on the ocular surface, allowing the glands to recover and resume producing healthy, natural tears. Because it targets the inflammatory process, it is not an instant fix. Many patients begin to see improvement within 4 to 6 weeks, but the maximum benefits typically appear after 3 to 6 months of consistent use.
Restasis Side Effects
Restasis is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include temporary burning or stinging sensation, eye redness, discharge or watery eyes, eye pain, itching, and a feeling that something is stuck in the eye (foreign body sensation). Some people may also experience blurred vision for a few minutes while the emulsion spreads across the eye surface.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Eye infection: thick discharge, swelling, or severe redness that does not go away
• Eye injury: This may happen if the tip of the vial accidentally scratches the eye surface
• Severe allergic reaction: hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, and difficulty breathing
Restasis Precautions
Do not use Restasis if you have a known allergy to cyclosporine or any inactive ingredient in the medication. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have an active eye infection, a history of herpes keratitis, or other significant eye diseases.
Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Restasis has no significant drug-drug interactions with other drugs. Wait at least 15 minutes between using Restasis and any other eye drops or lubricant to ensure both medications are effective.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Restasis is usually considered safe in pregnancy. However, this medication should be used only if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is unknown if topical cyclosporine passes into breast milk. To further minimize any risk, you can apply pressure to the tear duct for one minute after application to prevent the drug from entering the bloodstream.
Use Restasis exactly as your doctor tells you. This medication is for ophthalmic use only. Do not take it by mouth. Wash your hands thoroughly before applying this medication. Turn the vial upside down several times until the liquid is a uniform, opaque white before use. Remove your contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. Pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket and instill one drop without touching the vial tip to your eye, eyelashes, or any other surface to prevent contamination. Immediately after instilling the drop, apply gentle pressure to the inner corner of the eye (the tear duct) for 1 to 2 minutes. If you are using single-use vials, discard the vial immediately after use, even if some medication remains. Store Restasis at room temperature (68°F to 77°F). Do not freeze or refrigerate the emulsion. Keep out of reach of children.
