What is Revolution (Selamectin) Used For?
Revolution (Selamectin) is an avermectin used in dogs for the
treatment, control, and prevention of flea infestations (including killing adult fleas and preventing their eggs from hatching), the prevention of heartworm disease, the treatment of ear mites, the control of sarcoptic mange, and the control of American dog tick infestations. In cats, Revolution is used for the prevention and control of flea infestations, prevention of heartworm disease, and the treatment and control of ear mites, roundworms (Toxocara cati), and intestinal hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme).
Selamectin works by interfering with the chloride channel conductance in the parasites, which disrupts their normal neurotransmission. This interference inhibits the electrical activity of the nerve and muscle cells within the parasites, which results in paralysis and death. By killing adult fleas and ensuring that no viable eggs are produced, this medication breaks the flea life cycle.
For internal parasites like heartworms, it kills the immature larvae before they can develop into adults that cause damage to the heart and lungs. In cats, for intestinal worms such as hookworms and roundworms, the paralysis caused by this medication allows the pet's body to expel the dead or dying worms. In the case of ear mites and lice, this drug effectively kills the adult parasites living on or in the animal.
Administer this medication to your pet exactly as prescribed by your Vet. For more information on its use, check out the
product monograph.
What Side Effects Can Revolution or Generic Selamectin Cause?
Revolution is generally well-tolerated, but common mild effects at the site of application include stiff or clumped hair, a slight powdery residue, or discoloration of the fur, all of which are usually temporary. Some pets may experience temporary hair loss (alopecia) at or near the application site, sometimes accompanied by skin redness, itching, or inflammation. Other mild signs that have been observed include a temporary loss of appetite (anorexia), lethargy, and digestive issues like loose stool or diarrhea. Inform your vet if these side effects persist or worsen.
Serious side effects may include:
• Allergic reactions: Breathing difficulties, body rash, itching, hives, skin blistering, and swelling of the face;
• Nervous system problems: Muscle tremors, seizures, and ataxia, which is a loss of coordination or trouble standing;
Consult your veterinarian as soon as possible if you notice any of these serious side effects. Also, ensure you inform your vet about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.
Warnings
Do not use this medication in pets with a history of hypersensitivity reaction to selamectin, other ingredients of Revolution. Also, do not use Revolution in pets that are sick, severely debilitated, or underweight. Before administering this medication to your pet, ensure your pet is tested for existing heartworm infections. While selamectin safely clears microfilariae (larvae), a rapid kill-off in heavily infected animals requires veterinary monitoring to avoid complications.
Selamectin has been used safely along with several other topical medications with no adverse drug interactions. However, while there are no broadly known harmful interactions for most pets, a specific concern exists for dogs with the MDR1 genetic mutation, such as certain collie-type breeds. For these dogs, issues may arise if selamectin is used more frequently than once a month or if it is combined with certain other medications like cyclosporine, spironolactone, ketoconazole, itraconazole, erythromycin, or diltiazem. Therefore, before administering this medication to your pet, inform your vet about any other medications your dog is currently taking to determine if it is safe to use along with selamectin.
This medication is considered safe to use in pregnant and lactating pets. In fact, treating a lactating dog or cat with this medication actually provides secondary protection to her offspring by preventing flea infestations in the litter before the young are old enough to be treated directly. However, it is strictly not for use in puppies under 6 weeks of age or kittens under 8 weeks of age. Store this medication at room temperature and keep away from children and pets.
