Rogaine Information

Rogaine (Minoxidil) is primarily used in both men and women to treat androgenetic alopecia, more commonly known as male or female pattern hair loss. While the topical foam and solution are standard for the scalp, healthcare providers also use them for other hair loss conditions such as alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, and sometimes to promote beard growth. The active ingredient is minoxidil, a direct-acting vasodilator that acts as a prodrug; it must be converted to its active form, minoxidil sulfate, by enzymes in the body to produce its effects. It acts on specific ion channels in smooth muscle cells of blood vessels, causing them to relax and dilate, a process called vasodilation. On the scalp, this increased blood flow likely delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles. Furthermore, it seems to alter the hair growth cycle by prolonging the anagen (growth) phase and shortening the telogen (resting) phase. Recent research suggests it may also increase the size of miniaturized hair follicles, leading to thicker hair shafts over time. Androgenetic alopecia is a genetic condition where hair follicles gradually shrink, or miniaturize, under the influence of hormones like dihydrotestosterone. This causes hair to become finer and shorter until the follicle eventually stops producing hair altogether. Minoxidil helps by reversing this miniaturization process and prolonging follicle growth beyond its natural duration.

One of the most frustrating aspects of starting topical minoxidil is what many call the dread shed. During the first two to six weeks of use, hair loss might actually increase. It seems that the medication pushes out old, thin hairs to make room for new, stronger ones. If someone isn't expecting this, they might quit just when the drug is starting to work. Results usually take about three to four months to become visible. It is also a lifelong commitment, as the medication does not cure baldness; it only manages it.

Rogaine Side Effects

While topical application limits systemic absorption, some side effects are possible. Some common side effects include local redness, itchiness, dryness, flaky skin, temporary worsening of hair loss during the first 2-6 weeks of use, and changes in hair color and texture. If you experience any of these mild side effects and they persist or worsen, promptly inform your doctor.

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as abdominal pain, vomiting, breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat;
• Chest pain;
• Depression;
• Dizziness or fainting;
• Low blood pressure;
• Muscle pain;
• Rapid heartbeat;
• Swollen hands or feet;
• Unexplained weight gain

Also, inform your doctor if you notice any other side effects not listed here.

Rogaine Precautions

Do not use this topical medication if you are allergic to minoxidil, other ingredients in Rogaine, or any other medicine. Before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor about any medical conditions you previously or currently have, including the following:
• Broken or infected scalp or skin;
• Heart disease;
• High or low blood pressure;
• Kidney disease;
• Secondary syphilis infection;
• Unexplained cause of baldness

It is important to apply this topical medication only to a healthy, intact scalp. Application to skin that is infected, irritated, or inflamed (e.g., severe seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis) appears to significantly increase the risk of systemic absorption and adverse effects. This medication should not be used in individuals under 18 or over 65. This medication is also not suitable for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women as it can cause excessive hair growth and other adverse effects in the growing fetus and breastfed infants.

Minoxidil may potentiate the orthostatic hypotensive effects of guanethidine, potentially leading to profound drops in blood pressure upon standing. Some evidence also suggests that low-dose aspirin might interfere with the enzyme (sulfotransferase) required to convert minoxidil into its active sulfate form, potentially reducing its effectiveness for hair growth. Therefore, it is imperative to let your doctor know about any medicine or supplements you are currently taking, including other topical medications, to determine if they can be used with minoxidil. This medication is available in regular solutions and shampoos for both men and women. Apply this topical product to your scalp as stated in the medication pack or as directed by your doctor. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap right away after applying this medication to avoid hair growing in the wrong places. Give the solution at least four hours to dry before using any other topical products. Store this medication in a cool and dry place and keep it away from children and pets.
