Rythmol and Equivalent
Generic Equivalent of Rythmol
Rythmol Information
Rythmol is a Class 1C antiarrhythmic drug used to manage and treat serious irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and ventricular arrhythmias, in patients without underlying structural heart disease (e.g., a recent heart attack or heart failure). For ventricular arrhythmias, it is strictly reserved for life-threatening cases. It works by blocking the fast sodium channels in heart tissue, slowing the conduction of electrical impulses, and stabilizing myocardial membranes. Additionally, it exhibits mild beta-adrenergic blocking properties, helping to stabilize heart rhythms and restore a normal heartbeat.
Side Effects
Commonly reported side effects include dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, light-headedness, weakness, insomnia, blurred vision, abdominal pain or cramping, gas, heartburn, constipation, or diarrhea. Many patients also experience a distinct bitter or metallic change in their sense of taste.
Serious side effects of Rythmol include:
• Blood Disorders: Rarely, it may cause reduced white blood cell counts, which lower the body's ability to fight off infections, or blood clotting difficulties.
• Conduction Disturbances: Risk of dose-related AV block or slow heartbeats (bradycardia).
• Heart Failure: Potential to precipitate or aggravate heart failure symptoms due to its mild beta-blocking effects and negative inotropic (weakening heart contraction) effects.
• Proarrhythmic Effects: Increased risk of triggering new or worsened, dangerous abnormal heart rhythms.
Seek medical attention immediately if you experience severe chest pain, seizures, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as widespread hives, abdominal cramps, severe vomiting, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat. You should also contact your doctor right away if you experience sudden fainting, persistent heart palpitations, severe shortness of breath, unusual swelling in the feet or lower legs, or a fever and sore throat. Do not stop taking this medication suddenly without consulting your doctor, as abruptly discontinuing an antiarrhythmic can cause a rapid and dangerous return of severe heart irregularities.
Precautions:
Do not use Rythmol if you have a known hypersensitivity or serious allergic reaction to propafenone hydrochloride or any of the inactive ingredients in the formulation, or if you have any of the following conditions:
o Brugada Syndrome or inherited heart rhythm disorders.
o Chronic breathing disorders, including severe asthma or bronchitis.
o Myasthenia gravis.
o Severe bradycardia (abnormally slow heart rate) or heart block without a functioning pacemaker.
o Severe or uncontrolled heart failure, or a history of a recent heart attack.
Speak to your doctor before taking Rythmol if you have:
o Breastfeeding requirements: Propafenone passes directly into human breast milk and may impact a nursing infant. Use during breastfeeding is generally not recommended, and a doctor should be consulted to evaluate alternatives.
o Liver disease or reduced kidney function: Because Rythmol is heavily processed by these organs, impaired function can cause the drug to build up in your body, requiring careful dose adjustments and monitoring.
o Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant: Rythmol crosses the placenta and should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the clinical risk to the fetus.
Rythmol possesses complex drug interactions. Avoid simultaneous use with other antiarrhythmic agents or drugs that prolong the QT interval. It interacts significantly with CYP2D6 and CYP3A4. Co-administration with beta-blockers, digoxin, and blood thinners can raise their levels in the blood, substantially increasing the risk of toxic drug accumulation or dangerous bleeding complications.
Because Rythmol can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and blurred vision, do not drive or operate complex machinery until you are fully aware of how this medication affects your alertness.
Store Rythmol tablets at controlled room temperature away from excessive heat and direct moisture. Keep the container tightly closed when not in use. Always store this medication safely, out of reach of children and pets.
