Safe Plus Information

Safe Plus (Carbonyl Iron for Children) is used to prevent and treat iron deficiency and anemia in children. Untreated iron deficiency in children can affect growth and development. Symptoms of iron deficiency include pale skin, fussiness, fatigue, swollen tongue, and fast heartbeat. Iron supplements like Carbonyl Iron provide the body with iron, which is essential for producing red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen through the blood to the tissues and organs.

Safe Plus Side Effects

The most common side effects of Safe Plus may include constipation, dark-colored stools, diarrhea, nausea, and tooth discoloration. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat

Safe Plus Precautions

Do not use Safe Plus if you are allergic to Carbonyl Iron, or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have anemia that is not caused by iron deficiency, hemolytic anemia, iron overload, such as hemochromatosis, lactose intolerance, stomach ulcer, ulcerative colitis, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Safe Plus and other medications, such as antacids, doxycycline, cimetidine, etc. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant before using Safe Plus. Iron needs change during pregnancy. However, your doctor’s assessment will determine if you need supplementation with Carbonyl Iron. Ask a doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant. Your dose needs may be different during pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed before using Safe Plus. Iron passes into breast milk in small amounts but does not significantly increase iron levels in breast milk or harm a nursing infant. Do not use this medicine in children without talking to your doctor. Dosage in children depends on their age.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Safe Plus comes as an ampule. Pull firmly and twist the top in one direction to separate the ampules. Place the dose directly into the mouth towards the back of the tongue to avoid staining the teeth. Give your child water or juice to enhance acceptance. Safe Plus has a cherry flavor. Give your child one ampule one to two times a day with food. Administer this medicine a few hours before or after taking other medications. Avoid consuming dairy products at the same time as Safe Plus, as the calcium in dairy can negatively affect the absorption of Carbonyl iron. Your doctor will determine the duration of treatment depending on your child's condition. Store Safe Plus at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
