Generic Equivalent of Salofalk
Salofalk (Mesalamine/5-aminosalicylic acid) Information
Salofalk, which contains the active ingredient mesalamine (5-aminosalicylic acid), is an oral medication used to treat ulcerative colitis, a long-term condition that causes inflammation and irritation of the large intestine (colon). Salofalk is used both to treat flare-ups and to keep symptoms under control over time. It helps reduce diarrhea, stomach pain, bowel bleeding, and the urgent need to use the toilet. By calming inflammation in the bowel lining, Salofalk helps the intestine heal and lowers the risk of future flare-ups.
Salofalk EC tablets have a special protective coating and are taken by mouth. This coating allows the tablet to pass through the stomach without dissolving and release the medicine directly in the intestine, where it works best.
The mechanism of action of mesalamine involves reducing inflammation directly in the bowel. It blocks substances in the body that cause swelling, pain, and irritation in the intestinal lining. It also helps calm immune activity and reduces inflammation-related damage in the gut. Because Salofalk releases the medicine mainly in the intestine, only small amounts enter the rest of the body, which helps limit unwanted side effects.
Salofalk Side Effects
Salofalk is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur. Common side effects include headache, stomach pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, and mild stomach upset. Some people may also notice gas, dizziness, or a mild skin rash. These effects are usually mild and may improve as your body adjusts to the medication.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Severe allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing;
• Severe stomach pain, bloody diarrhea, or worsening bowel symptoms;
• Signs of kidney problems, such as passing less urine, swelling of the legs or face, or unusual tiredness;
• Signs of liver problems, including yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or ongoing nausea;
• Unexplained fever, sore throat, or easy bruising, which may suggest blood problems
Salofalk Precautions
Do not take Salofalk if you are allergic to mesalazine, aspirin-like medicines (salicylates), or any ingredient in the tablets. Before starting treatment, tell your doctor about your medical history. Extra care is needed if you have kidney or liver problems, asthma, stomach ulcers, or past allergic reactions to similar medicines. Your doctor may arrange regular blood and urine tests to make sure your kidneys and liver remain healthy while you are taking this medicine.
Tell your doctor about all medicines you use, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Salofalk can interact with blood thinners, pain-relief medication like NSAIDs, steroid medicines, and drugs that affect kidney function. Do not take other aspirin-like medication unless your doctor says it is safe. Tell your doctor if you are taking other IBD medications such as Azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine, as Salofalk can increase the risk of side effects from these drugs.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Salofalk is generally considered low risk during pregnancy when needed, but it should always be used under medical guidance. Small amounts of mesalazine can pass into breast milk. Breastfeeding may still be possible, but monitor the baby for diarrhea or signs of sensitivity.
Take Salofalk EC tablets exactly as prescribed, usually once to three times a day, depending on your treatment plan. Swallow the tablets whole with water, preferably one hour before meals. Do not crush, chew, or break them, as this damages the protective coating and reduces the medicine's effectiveness.
Do not stop taking Salofalk without talking to your doctor, even if you feel better, because stopping too soon can cause symptoms to return. This medication may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from heat and moisture, and keep them out of reach of children.
