Sensipar Information
Sensipar (Cinacalcet) is used in treating specific forms of hyperparathyroidism, a condition where the parathyroid glands become overactive and produce too much parathyroid hormone (PTH). It is used to treat primary hyperparathyroidism, especially in patients who can't undergo surgery to remove the parathyroid gland. It is also used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis. It is also used to reduce elevated calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia) in individuals with parathyroid carcinoma, a rare cancer affecting the parathyroid glands. Sensipar's active ingredient, cinacalcet, belongs to a drug class known as calcimimetics. Usually, the parathyroid glands release parathyroid hormone (PTH) to regulate calcium and phosphorus balance in the body. In kidney disease or certain parathyroid disorders, PTH levels rise excessively, leading to problems such as bone pain, fragile bones, vascular calcification, and heart complications. By making the receptors more responsive, Sensipar lowers the secretion of PTH, which in turn helps reduce high calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood. In chronic kidney disease, this control of mineral imbalance prevents bone damage and cardiovascular risks. At the same time, in primary hyperparathyroidism and parathyroid carcinoma, it reduces calcium overload when surgery cannot be done. Overall, Sensipar improves calcium and phosphorus balance, protecting both bone strength and cardiovascular health in patients with these conditions.
