Sialor Information

Sialor (Anethole Trithione) is primarily used to treat xerostomia, more commonly known as dry mouth. Dry mouth arises as a result of a reduction in the production of saliva from the salivary glands. Untreated dry mouth can impair your oral hygiene and cause some discomfort. A reduced saliva production may be due to a medication’s side effects, or radiation therapy meant for treating head/neck cancers, but indirectly causing damage to the salivary glands. It may also be due to an autoimmune condition called Sjögren's syndrome, which affects the moisture-producing glands, such as salivary glands.

The way by which this sialogogue agent works is not fully understood. But Sialor is thought to work by directly stimulating the secretory cells in the salivary glands to increase saliva output. Some studies suggest that it enhances the parasympathetic nervous system's effects by modulating muscarinic acetylcholine receptors or increasing specific neuropeptides in saliva, ultimately leading to increased saliva production.

While being a saliva-stimulating agent is its primary use, some research has also noted its potential effectiveness as an adjunctive treatment for certain liver/bile diseases, such as cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder), gallstones, indigestion, chronic hepatitis, and liver cirrhosis. It helps treat these conditions by acting as a choleretic, directly stimulating bile production and the production of the protective antioxidant glutathione in the liver, potentially supporting detoxification processes and protecting the liver from oxidative stress.

The onset of action of anethole trithione can vary widely among individuals. For dry mouth, an initial improvement in symptoms is typically noticed within a few days to possibly a whole week after treatment begins.

Sialor Side Effects

The vast majority of people who experience side effects with Anethole Trithione will notice symptoms related to the digestive system, such as mild nausea and vomiting, and diarrhea. Other mild side effects include discoloration of urine, headache, fatigue, and dizziness. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, or swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat. Inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Sialor Precautions

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to anethole trithione, other ingredients in Sialor, or any other medications. Before you start taking this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any prior or current medical conditions. This medication should also be used with caution in individuals with impaired kidney or liver function, as they may be more prone to its adverse effects due to altered metabolism and excretion of the drug. Consult your doctor before using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Certain medications, such as antibiotics and anticonvulsants, can impair the metabolism of anethole trithione, affecting its action in the body. Therefore, it is imperative to inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines, including herbal pills, that you are taking before using Sialor to prevent potential drug interactions. Take Sialor tablets by mouth three times a day, usually with meals as directed by your doctor or as stated in the medication pack. Swallow the tablets whole with water. Take it at the same time each day to keep a steady effect. Do not stop early unless advised by a doctor, because dry-mouth relief may take days to weeks to appear. Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.
