Silvadene Information

Silvadene (Silver Sulfadiazene) is used to fight bacteria and yeast on the skin. The drug is used to prevent or treat serious infection on skin areas with second or third degree burns. Second degree burns involve the outer layer and part of the lower layer of the skin. Third-degree burns are those that destroy both the top layers of the skin and may even penetrate the innermost layer. Antibiotics like Silver Sulfadiazene works by killing bacteria or preventing its growth.

Silvadene Side Effects

The most common side effects of Silvadene may include itchy skin; burning sensation; skin discoloration; pain; Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Bloody urine;
• Easy bruising;
• Severe skin reaction such as pain followed by a red or purple skin rash;
• Signs of liver problems such as nausea, upper stomach pain; appetite loss; clay-colored stools;
• Sudden weakness

Silvadene Precautions

Do not use Silvadene if you are allergic to Silver Sulfadiazene or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have liver disease; have kidney disease; are allergic to sulfa drugs; have a genetic enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency; think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant; are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Silvadene and other medications, like albuterol; amlodipine; Benadryl; ibuprofen; metformin; omeprazole; Tylenol; Do not use Silvadene if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. Using this drug during late pregnancy can cause medical problems in your newborn. Do not use Silvadene while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. It is not known if Silver Sulfadiazene passes into your breastmilk or if it may harm nursing infants. This drug is not safe for use in premature babies or children below 2 months old. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Silvadene is a cream and should be used on the skin only. Do not take it by mouth. If Silvadene gets in your eyes, nose, or mouth, rinse with water. Wash your hands before and after applying the cream. The person applying the cream to burn wounds should wear sterile disposable gloves. Ensure you keep the treatment area as clean as possible to prevent further infection. Apply enough Silvadene cream to cover the affected area evenly. This cream is usually applied once or twice daily. Cover burn wounds with this medicine always. You can leave the treated skin area uncovered or use a gauze bandage as directed by your doctor. Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Skipping doses may increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of the reach of children.
