Sodium Sulfacetamide Information
Sodium sulfacetamide is a combination medicine containing sodium Sulfacetamide and Sulfur. It is used to treat skin problems such as acne, acne rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, and dandruff in adults and children at least 12 years old. Sulfa antibiotics like Sodium Sulfacetamide stop the growth of certain bacteria on the skin that can lead to acne and other skin conditions. Keratolytics like Sulfur remove the top layer of dead skin, unclog pores, and kill acne-causing bacteria.
Sodium Sulfacetamide Side Effects
The most common side effects of Sodium Sulfacetamide may include dry skin, redness or irritation at the application site, and mild peeling of the skin's top layer. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Joint pain;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Signs of liver problems such as appetite loss, vomiting, tiredness, clay-colored stools
Sodium Sulfacetamide Precautions
Do not use Sodium Sulfacetamide if you are allergic to Sodium Sulfacetamide, Sulfur, or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have Kidney problems, Broken skin, Asthma, Liver disease, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Sodium Sulfacetamide and other medications, such as silver sulfadiazine, other topical medications, etc. Do not use Sodium Sulfacetamide if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. This drug should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Do not use Sodium Sulfacetamide while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. It is unknown if Sodium Sulfacetamide passes into breast milk or if it may harm a nursing infant. Do not use this drug on children younger than 12 years of age. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. This drug is for topical use only. Clean and dry the affected skin area before applying Sodium Sulfacetamide. Shake the container well before use. Apply a thin layer of the medication to the affected skin area. Do not apply Sodium Sulfacetamide over large skin areas. Wash your hands with soap and water after using the drug. Avoid getting this medicine in your eyes or mouth. If Sodium Sulfacetamide gets into these areas, rinse with plenty of water. Tell your doctor if your condition worsens. Avoid getting this medication on your clothing. It may slightly discolor light fabrics. Store this medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep it out of the reach of children.
