Tears Naturale Information

Tears Naturale is typically used for general eye irritation. Its primary use is to treat symptoms such as eye itching, redness, and a burning or gritty sensation due to dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). It’s also often recommended for minor eye discomfort caused by environmental factors such as wind, sun, or prolonged use of digital screens. It is an ocular lubricant (artificial tears) which contains two active ingredients: dextran 70 (0.1%) and hypromellose (0.3%). It works through a water-soluble polymeric system called Duasorb. This system appears to interact with the existing tear film, promoting better wetting of the corneal surface. Increasing the viscosity of the eye fluid helps the solution adhere to the cornea longer than standard saline drops do. It keeps the surface hydrated and facilitates smoother eyelid movement.

Dry eye syndrome is essentially a loss of homeostasis in the tear film. It often involves either insufficient tear production or a film that evaporates too quickly, leaving the corneal nerves exposed and prone to inflammation. This is what causes the associated characteristic burning or gritty sensation. Tears Naturale helps by temporarily replacing the missing aqueous components and increasing the tear film's overall volume. This helps lower the osmolarity of tears and reduce friction during blinking. While it doesn't necessarily address the underlying cause of the reduced tear production, it protects the cornea from mechanical damage and desiccation that occur when the eye stays dry for too long.

Tears Naturale Side Effects

While usually well-tolerated by most individuals, it may cause mild, temporary worsening of eye irritation, including mild burning or irritation, itching or redness of your eyes, watery eyes, blurred vision, or increased eye sensitivity to light. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat;
• Headache;
• Persistent vision changes;
• Severe burning, eye pain, stinging, or eye irritation after use

Tears Naturale Precautions

Do not use this topical eye medication if you are allergic to dextran 70, hypromellose, other ingredients of Tears Naturale, or any other medicine. Before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor of any medical conditions you have had or currently have. You may experience blurred vision after using Tears Naturale. Therefore, do not drive or operate heavy machinery unless your vision is clear. While this medication is generally safe for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, consult your doctor before use. It is advised to remove your contact lenses before applying this medication to your eyes and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in. It is also advisable to let your doctor know about any medicines or supplements you are currently taking, including other eye medications, to help determine potential drug interactions with the ingredients in Tears Naturale.

Tears Naturale comes in several versions (like Tears Naturale II or Tears Naturale Free). If you apply drops more than 4–6 times daily, or if irritation persists, consult your doctor about using the Preservative-Free version to avoid surface toxicity. Apply 1-2 drops of this artificial tear to your eyes as directed by your doctor or as stated in the medication pack. If you are using more than one type of eye drop, wait at least 5 minutes before using the second type of eye drop. Apply this medication regularly as prescribed by your doctor for optimal effects.
