Tradjenta Information

Tradjenta (Linagliptin) is a prescription medication primarily used alone or with other medicines to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is typically used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control. Linagliptin belongs to the group of oral hypoglycemic agents known as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. It works by blocking the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 enzyme, which we know normally breaks down incretin hormones quickly after we eat. By inhibiting this enzyme, linagliptin keeps these hormones active longer, which signals the pancreas to release more insulin and tells the liver to stop producing so much glucose.

This mechanism of action addresses the core issue in type 2 diabetes, where the body resists insulin or produces too little of it, leading to chronically high blood sugar that damages blood vessels and organs. Tradjenta helps manage the disease by boosting the body’s natural hormonal response to food, effectively lowering those dangerous blood sugar spikes without usually causing low blood sugar on its own. It is worth noting that this medication is not recommended for the treatment of type-1 diabetes. It should also not be used in life-threatening complications of diabetes known as diabetic ketoacidosis.

It is unknown whether linagliptin affects the unborn baby or is present in breast milk. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. The safety and effectiveness of using this medication have not been established for children. This medication should be used with caution in older adults, as they may be more likely to experience side effects of this medication.

Some medications like carbamazepine and rifampicin can render linagliptin ineffective when used together with it. Therefore, you must inform your healthcare provider of all medicines, including herbal products and supplements, that you are taking before starting linagliptin to prevent drug interactions. You should take Tradjenta tablets orally as directed by your physician. It really doesn't matter if you take it with food or on an empty stomach, so you can fit it into your routine whenever it works best for you. Check out the leaflet in the medication pack for more usage instructions. Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of the reach of children.
