Trental Information

Trental (Pentoxifylline Extended Release) is primarily used to treat intermittent claudication, a symptom of peripheral artery disease where narrowed arteries in the legs restrict oxygen-rich blood flow to the muscles. This condition manifests as significant cramping or aching during mild physical activity, such as walking, which typically subsides with rest. Trental contains pentoxifylline as its active ingredient and belongs to the hemorrheologic class of drugs.

Pentoxifylline works not by dilating the vessels themselves, but by modifying the physical properties of the blood to ensure it can navigate these narrowed vessels. Specifically, it increases the flexibility of red blood cells, allowing them to squish and deform through tight capillaries more easily. Furthermore, it reduces blood viscosity, essentially making the blood less thick and discourages platelets from clumping together. Trental Side Effects

Some mild side effects include mild agitation, back, leg, or muscle pain, bloating, diarrhea, dizziness or light-headedness, flushing, general feeling of discomfort or feeling unwell, headache, heartburn, increased blood pressure, nausea, nosebleeds, stomach discomfort, trouble sleeping, unusual weakness, and vomiting. Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat;
• Bleeding in the stomach with symptoms like bloody, black, or tarry stools; spitting up of blood; vomiting blood;
• Blood clotting problems with symptoms like unusual nosebleeds, bruising, blood in urine, coughing blood, bleeding gums;
• Eye problems or vision changes with symptoms like blurred vision, blind spots in the vision;
• Frequent infections with symptoms like fever or chills, neck stiffness, headache, severe diarrhea, shortness of breath, prolonged dizziness;
• Gallbladder inflammation with symptoms like fever, nausea, abdominal pain spreading to the shoulder or back;
• Heart problems with symptoms like chest pain, abnormal heartbeat, difficulty in breathing;
• Liver problems with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes;
• Swelling of the arms, hands, legs, feet, and ankles, face

Trental Precautions

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to pentoxifylline, other ingredients in Trental, or any other medicines. Before you start taking this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any prior or current medical conditions, including the following:

• Heart disease, including heart attack, abnormal heart rhythm;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Low blood pressure;
• Peptic ulcer;
• Recent brain or eye bleeding or haemorrhagic stroke

For some individuals, the first few doses can cause dizziness or light-headedness. Therefore, it is advised to wait until you know how it affects you before driving or operating heavy machinery. Pentoxifylline is classified as Category C regarding pregnancy, meaning that while animal studies have shown some risks at high doses, there aren't enough human trials to guarantee safety. It is typically only used if its medical necessity is vital. Do not breastfeed while using this medication unless instructed by your doctor, as it can pass through the breastmilk and potentially cause side effects like irritability in the baby. The safety and effectiveness of using this medication have not been established for children younger than 18 years.

Taking pentoxifylline alongside theophylline can lead to toxic levels of theophylline in the blood, potentially causing serious adverse effects. Likewise, using this medication along with blood thinners like warfarin can increase the risk of bleeding. Therefore, it is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, including herbal medications and supplements, that you are taking before starting pentoxifylline to prevent drug interactions. Swallow the pentoxifylline tablets whole three times a day, ideally during your main meals. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet, as this destroys the extended-release mechanism and increases the risk of side effects. Take the medication at the same time each day to maintain a steady level in your bloodstream. You must continue the treatment for at least 8 weeks to properly assess its effectiveness. Even if you feel better sooner, complete the full course as prescribed by your doctor. Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.
