Trintellix Information

Trintellix (Vortioxetine) is used to treat major depressive disorder, especially in adults with anxiety. Depression is a complex mood disorder characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, changes in appetite or sleep, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and sometimes thoughts of worthlessness or hopelessness. The interesting fact about Trintellix is that some studies have shown it can potentially offer benefits beyond just the classic emotional symptoms of depression. For example, some data suggest it might help with the speed of processing (a type of cognitive function) in adults experiencing a major depressive episode.

Vortioxetine's mechanism of action is rather complex, compared to some other antidepressants, as it is a serotonin modulator or multimodal antidepressant. Like a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), such as Prozac, it blocks the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT), thereby increasing the levels of this neurotransmitter in the brain. However, it also directly modulates several different serotonin receptors, which contributes to its unique antidepressant effects beyond simple serotonin reuptake inhibition. This unique combination of actions is believed to help regulate serotonin activity, thereby improving mood and other depressive symptoms.

Trintellix Side Effects

While it is generally safe and well-tolerated by most individuals, vortioxetine can cause a range of side effects, some of which are mild and others that are serious but rare. Possible mild side effects to be aware of include nausea, constipation, vomiting, dry eyes and mouth, dizziness, flu symptoms, night sweats, and weight gain.

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, hives, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat, and body rash;
• Easy bruising or bleeding, which may occur with the concurrent use of blood thinners or antiplatelets like aspirin;
• Eye problems such as sudden eye pain, changes in vision, or seeing colored rings around lights;
• Low blood pressure with symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, or syncope (passing out), which poses a risk for falls, particularly in older adults;
• Low Sodium in the blood with symptoms like confusion, seizures, headache;
• Mania with symptoms like decreased need for sleep, hallucinations, elevated or irritable mood, racing thoughts, aggressive behaviors;
• Pancreatitis with symptoms like abdominal pain on the upper left side, back pain, nausea, fever, chills, rapid heartbeat, swollen abdomen;
• Serotonin Syndrome, with symptoms such as fever, seizures, muscle spasms or twitches, nausea, and vomiting;
• Urinary tract infection with symptoms of pain when urinating, urinating more often than usual, low back or flank pain

As with many other antidepressants, there is an increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior, especially in children, adolescents, and young adults (under 25), particularly when first starting this medication or when the dose is changed. Therefore, it is essential to monitor individuals taking this medication, particularly children and young adults, for any unusual changes in behavior.

You should avoid engaging in activities that require mental alertness or hazardous tasks until you have determined how this medication affects you, as this medication may cause dizziness. Discontinuing this medication suddenly can lead to side effects such as dizziness, abnormal dreams, numbness or tingling sensations, and agitation. Consult your doctor to guide you on how to stop it safely.

This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks, as determined by your doctor. Studies have reported an increase in the risk of complications after birth in babies born to women who used similar drugs in its class in the third trimester. Please discuss with your doctor whether you should continue breastfeeding, as it can be passed through breast milk. Trintellix is not safe and effective for use in children. Caution is advised when using this medication in the elderly, as they are more prone to its side effects.

Taking vortioxetine with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (such as tranylcypromine and phenelzine) or tricyclic antidepressants may cause a severe reaction called serotonin toxicity. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines, including herbal medications, that you are taking before using Trintellix to prevent potential drug interactions.

Take Trintellix oral tablets once daily, with or without food. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose of this medicine for you. Take it regularly at the same time each day, as it may take a week or two after starting this treatment for the effect to begin building up, and 4-6 weeks before you feel the full benefit. Also, please don't stop it abruptly without talking to your doctor, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms. Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.
