Triphasil Information

Triphasil (Levonorgestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol) is used to prevent ovulation and to make periods (menstrual flow) more regular, decrease blood loss, relieve painful periods, and reduce the risk of ovarian cysts. Triphasil also causes changes to the cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. This drug is a combination hormone medication for preventing pregnancy. Progestin, like Levonorgestrel, precludes the release of an egg from the ovary or prevents the fertilization of the egg by sperm. Synthetic estrogens like Ethinyl estradiol work by stopping a woman's egg (Ovum) from fully developing each month to prevent fertilization. It would be best to know that Triphasil is a form of birth control method, and it does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, gonorrhea, or chlamydia.

Triphasil Side Effects

The most common side effects of Triphasil may include breast discharge, breakthrough bleeding; breast tenderness; nausea; problems with contact lenses; and unintended weight gain. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Lumps in the breast or severe breast pain;
• Heavy menstrual flow;
• Mental/mood changes (such as new/worsening depression);
• Passage of dark colour urine;
• Severe abdominal pain;
• Severe chest pain;
• Unusual changes in vaginal bleeding (such as continuous spotting, sudden heavy bleeding, missed periods);
• Vision problems;
• Yellowing eyes/skin

Triphasil Precautions

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to estrogens-containing medicine (such as ethinyl estradiol, mestranol) or any progestins (such as norethindrone, desogestrel) or if you have any other allergies. It is crucial to inform your doctor about your medical history, including seizure or migraine headaches; cancer such as liver cancer; Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis (chronic inflammatory bowel disease); diabetes mellitus; a disorder of blood coagulation causing failure of the kidneys); irregular vaginal bleeding; recently had a baby; sickle cell disease; history of smoking or a chronic smoker; undiagnosed vaginal bleeding. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Triphasil and other medications such as ritonavir, dexamethasone, phenytoin; primidone; carbamazepine; rifampicin; and tranexamic acid. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Do not use Triphasil if you are pregnant or if you miss two menstrual periods in a row. Wait at least 4 weeks before using Triphasil if you recently had a baby. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. The hormones in Triphasil may pass into breast milk and harm a nursing infant. Take Triphasil precisely as prescribed by your doctor. Take the first pill on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period begins. You may need to use backup birth control, such as condoms when you first start using Triphasil. Take one pill every day, no more than 24 hours apart. When the pills run out, start a new pack the following day. You may get pregnant if you do not take your pills daily. If you miss one active pill, take two pills on the day you remember and one pill per day for the rest of the pack. If you miss two active pills in a row in week 1 or 2, take two pills per day for two days in a row. Then, take one pill per day for the rest of the pack. Use backup birth control for at least 7 days following the missed pills. Triphasil will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. Using a condom is the only way to protect yourself from these diseases. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about your medication.
