Vasotec and Equivalent
Generic Equivalent of Vasotec
Vasotec (Enalapril) Information
Vasotec, which contains the active ingredient enalapril, is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is also prescribed to treat symptomatic heart failure and to prevent the development of heart failure in patients with a specific heart condition known as left ventricular dysfunction. By lowering blood pressure, Vasotec helps reduce the risk of serious health events such as strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. The medication is taken by mouth, either as a tablet or an oral solution, typically once or twice daily as directed by a doctor.
The mechanism of action of enalapril involves blocking the enzyme that converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor. By reducing its levels, Vasotec allows blood vessels to relax and widen. This process lowers blood pressure, reduces the heart's workload, and improves blood and oxygen supply to the heart.
Vasotec Side Effects
Vasotec is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include a dry, persistent cough; dizziness or feeling lightheaded (especially when standing up quickly); headache; fatigue; nausea; diarrhea; and a mild skin rash.
Less common side effects may include blurred vision and confusion, often associated with changes in blood pressure or electrolyte levels.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Changes in heart rhythm: A very fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat.
• High potassium levels: Muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, or numbness and tingling in the hands or feet.
• Kidney problems: A significant decrease in the amount or frequency of urine, or blood in the urine.
• Liver dysfunction: Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or severe upper stomach pain.
• Severe allergic reactions (angioedema): Sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat that may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing.
• Severe low blood pressure (hypotension): Fainting spells or extreme dizziness.
Vasotec Precautions
Do not use Vasotec if you are allergic to enalapril or any other ACE inhibitor, or if you have a history of angioedema (severe swelling) for any reason. It is also not recommended for use if you are taking the heart failure medication sacubitril or if you have diabetes and are taking aliskiren.
Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney or liver disease, heart valve problems, diabetes, or a history of low blood pressure. Enalapril may affect blood sugar control in some people with diabetes, so monitoring is advised, especially when starting therapy.
Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter products. Vasotec may interact with water pills (diuretics), potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium, lithium, and certain pain relievers like NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen), which can strain the kidneys and reduce the drug's effectiveness.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to breastfeed. Vasotec should not be used during pregnancy, particularly during the second and third trimesters, as it can cause serious injury or death to a developing fetus. If you become pregnant, stop the medication and contact your doctor immediately. Small amounts of enalapril pass into breast milk. Although Vasotec is considered okay to use while breastfeeding, you should discuss the risks with your doctor, especially if your baby was born prematurely.
Take Vasotec exactly as prescribed, ideally at the same time each day, with or without food. Your doctor will determine the dose based on your condition, usually starting low and adjusting as needed. Maintain good hydration, especially during hot weather or after vomiting or diarrhea. Avoid sudden posture changes to prevent dizziness from hypotension. Vasotec tablets should be stored at room temperature in a dry place, away from heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
