Vtama (Tapinarof) Information
Vtama, which contains the active ingredient tapinarof, is a prescription-strength, non-steroidal topical cream. It is primarily used to treat plaque psoriasis in adults. It is also used to treat atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children as young as 2 years old. Because it does not contain steroids, it is safe for long-term use and can be applied to sensitive skin areas such as the face, neck, armpits, and groin. The medication is typically applied as a thin layer to the affected areas once daily. Unlike many treatments, Vtama may provide a "remittive effect," where some patients maintain clear skin for several months even after they stop using the cream.
Vtama belongs to a class of drugs called aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonists. The mechanism of action involves binding to and activating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor in the skin, thereby helping regulate the body's inflammatory response and improving the skin's barrier function. This targeted approach helps reduce the overproduction of skin cells and lower inflammation, clearing plaques and relieving itching.
Vtama Side Effects
Vtama is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include folliculitis, which appears as small red, itchy bumps or pus-filled pimples around the hair follicles where the cream is applied. Other common localized reactions include contact dermatitis. Some patients may also experience systemic symptoms, such as a headache, a stuffy or runny nose, or a sore throat.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop using the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Severe allergic reactions: Swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing.
• Signs of skin infection: extreme tenderness or pus, extreme skin irritation
Vtama Precautions
Do not use Vtama if you have a known allergy to tapinarof or any inactive ingredient in the medication. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have active skin infections or a history of severe reactions to other topical skin products.
Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Because of its low systemic absorption, there is no known significant drug interaction between Vtama and other drugs. However, do not mix two creams together at the exact same moment on the skin.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. It is unknown if Vtama is safe for use during pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding and your doctor recommends continuing treatment, avoid applying the cream directly to the nipple or areola to prevent your infant from accidentally ingesting the medication.
Use Vtama exactly as your doctor tells you. Vtama is a topical medication and should be applied to the skin only. Do not take it by mouth. Apply a thin layer only on the areas of your skin affected by psoriasis or eczema, and try to do so at roughly the same time each day. It is important to avoid applying the cream to unaffected skin and to keep the medication away from your eyes, mouth, and vagina. After application, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water unless your hands are the area being treated. If someone else applies the cream for you, they should also wash their hands immediately afterward.
Store the tube at room temperature, typically between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C). It is essential not to freeze the cream and to protect it from exposure to excessive heat. Ensure the container is tightly closed when not in use and stored safely out of reach of children.
