Winlevi Information

Winlevi (Clascoterone) is a topical medication used to treat acne vulgaris in patients aged 12 years and older. Its active ingredient is clascoterone, which belongs to a novel class of drugs called androgen receptor inhibitors. Acne vulgaris is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to the formation of pimples. Several factors contribute to the development of acne, including inflammation and excessive sebum (oil) production. While the mechanism of action of Winlevi is not well understood, it is believed to block the androgen receptors in the skin, primarily in the sebaceous glands and hair follicles. This action, in turn, helps to reduce the production of excess sebum (oil) and diminish the inflammatory processes associated with acne.

Winlevi Side Effects

Like all medications, clascoterone has a range of potential side effects. Common mild side effects include skin itching, burning, redness, peeling, dryness or other signs of skin irritation and change of hair colour. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Signs of adrenal gland problems such as altered mental problems, depression, memory problems, menstrual changes, nausea, vomiting, and unexplained tiredness.

Contact your doctor if you notice any other unusual symptoms not mentioned here.

Clascoterone may interact with other medications or substances, such as topical and oral corticosteroids. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines, including other topical treatments, that you are taking before starting Winlevi to prevent potential drug interactions. Winlevi is available as a topical cream for application topically to the affected area of the skin twice daily, or as directed by your doctor. Ensure the affected area of the skin is clean and dry before applying the cream. Do not cover the applied areas of the skin with occlusive dressing to avoid absorption of this medicine into the systemic circulation. Avoid getting this medication in contact with your eyes, mouth, or vagina. Also, avoid using skin products that may dry or irritate your skin, such as medicated soaps, while using Winlevi. Refer to the leaflet included in the medication pack for additional usage details. Do not use this medication longer than prescribed.
