Xenazine Information:

Xenazine (Tetrabenazine) is medication used to treat the symptoms of hyperkinetic diseases (characterized by uncontrollable movements), specially Huntington’s Disease, Tourette Syndrome, Tardive Dyskinesia, and Hemiballismus. Xenazine is a vesicular monoamine transporter type 2 (VMAT2) that is thought to work through its effect on monoamines. Xenazine is a reversible depletor of dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and histamine, monoamines that come from nerve terminals. Xenazine inhibits vesicular monoamine transporter 2, resulting in a decreased intake of monoamines into synaptic vesicles, as well as a depletion of monoamine storage. As monoamines play a large roll in motor function, the depletion of them can lead to a lessening of uncontrollable movements. You should not use Xenazine if you have severe or untreated depression, suicidal thoughts, liver disease, or if you have taken reserpine in the past 20 days. Tell your doctor about any medications you have used in the past or any medications you are currently using in order to reduce the risk of interactions. Do not use Xenazine if you have used a MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days, as an interaction can occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.

Take this medication as directed. You may have depression or thoughts about suicide while taking this medication. Report any changes in your mood to your doctor. Common side effects of Xenazine include drowsiness, depressed mood, nausea, or feeling anxious, agitated, or restless. Call your doctor immediately if you experience tremors, shaking, restless movement, problems with balance, uncontrolled muscle movements in your face, trouble swallowing, fast or pounding heartbeats, light-headedness, or symptoms of a severe nervous system reaction including rigid muscles, high fever, sweating, confusion, or fast or uneven heartbeats. If you experience any signs of an allergic reaction or are having serious thoughts of suicide, seek immediate medical attention.
