Xiidra Information
Xiidra (Lifitegrast) is a prescription eye drop specifically designed to treat both the signs and the symptoms of dry eye disease, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Unlike standard artificial tears, which provide only temporary lubrication, Xiidra targets the underlying inflammation that often drives chronic dryness. The active ingredient in this ophthalmic solution is lifitegrast, at a concentration of 5%. It belongs to a relatively new class of medications known as lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) antagonists. It works by acting as a molecular blocker. Specifically, lifitegrast binds to the LFA-1 protein on the surface of your T cells (white blood cells). This prevents LFA-1 from interacting with ICAM-1 (intercellular adhesion molecule-1) on the surface of the eye. This interaction usually activates T cells and triggers the release of inflammatory chemicals; by preventing this interaction, Xiidra essentially shuts down the inflammatory cycle at its source.
Dry Eye Disease is more than just a lack of tears. It is a chronic, self-perpetuating inflammatory condition of the eyes. It occurs when your eyes either don't produce enough tears or produce poor-quality tears, leading to an unstable tear film that evaporates too quickly. This instability causes the surface of the eye to become stressed and inflamed, which in turn recruits more immune cells, creating a loop of burning, redness, and grit. Xiidra helps by intervening in this immune response. Unlike simple over-the-counter lubricants that just add artificial tears, this medication targets the underlying biology. Reducing T-cell activity on the ocular surface allows the eye's natural environment to heal, helping stabilize the tear film and providing more lasting relief from that gritty sensation.
Xiidra Side Effects
Xiidra has been shown to be safe and effective for the treatment of dry eye disease when used as directed by a qualified clinician. However, it may cause some temporary side effects such as blurred vision, eye irritation or pain during drop application, headaches, increased tearing, itchy and red eyes, sensitivity to light, and an unpleasant taste. If you experience any of these mild side effects and they persist or worsen, promptly inform your doctor.
Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following allergic reactions: breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat. Also, inform your doctor if you notice any other side effects not listed here.
Xiidra Precautions
Do not use this eye solution if you are allergic to lifitegrast, any other Xiidra ingredient, or any other medicine. Before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor of any medical conditions, including eye infections or other eye conditions. It is very common to experience temporary blurred vision immediately after applying the drops. You should avoid driving, using heavy machinery, or performing any activity that requires clear sight until your vision has fully returned to normal. Xiidra is not intended for use while wearing contact lenses. You should remove your lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in.
There is limited data regarding the use of Xiidra in pregnant women. This medication should only be used in pregnancy if the potential benefit to the mother justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not currently known if lifitegrast passes into human breast milk or how it might affect a nursing infant. If you are breastfeeding, you should discuss with your doctor whether the potential risks outweigh the benefits of continuing the medication. The safety and effectiveness of using this medication have not been established for children.
While Lifitegrast isn't known for major interactions with other medications, inform your doctor about all medications you're using, including other eye medications, before starting Xiidra. This medication is available as a single-use, preservative-free product. Each vial is intended for single use only. Apply one drop in each affected eye, twice a day (roughly 12 hours apart), as directed by your doctor. It's crucial to adhere to your doctor's prescribed dosing schedule to obtain optimal results. Also, make sure to read the informational leaflet included with the medication for further guidance on using this treatment. Keep these single-use containers in their original foil pouch in a cool, dry location until you're ready to use one. Discard the container after using it in each eye.
