Zebeta and Equivalent
Generic Equivalent of Zebeta
Zebeta (Bisoprolol) Information
Zebeta, which contains the active ingredient bisoprolol, is a cardioselective beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure helps reduce the risk of future strokes, heart disease, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Zebeta is also commonly prescribed for stable chronic heart failure, particularly heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), as well as certain types of chest pain (angina) and irregular heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation (for heart rate control). The medication is taken by mouth as a tablet, typically once daily.
The mechanism of action of bisoprolol involves selectively blocking beta-1 receptors in the heart. By doing so, it blocks the effects of certain natural chemicals, such as adrenaline, leading to a slower heart rate and reduced force of heart contractions. This action reduces the heart’s workload and lowers blood pressure primarily by slowing the heart rate and reducing cardiac output.
Zebeta Side Effects
Zebeta is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as the body adjusts to the treatment. Commonly reported effects include fatigue, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhea, sleep disturbances (including insomnia), and cold hands or feet. Some patients may also experience dry or irritated eyes or changes in sexual function. Less commonly, patients may experience symptoms resembling a mild upper respiratory infection, such as a runny nose or sore throat.
Seek immediate medical attention if you have any of the serious side effects:
• Allergic reactions: Severe skin rash, hives, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Changes in heart rate: An irregular heart rhythm, a very slow heartbeat, or feeling as though you might faint.
• Worsening heart failure: Shortness of breath (even at rest or with minimal exertion), sudden weight gain, or swelling of the legs, ankles, or hands.
• Mood changes: Severe feelings of depression, confusion, or hallucinations.
• Raynaud's phenomenon: Fingers or toes that turn pale or blue and feel numb, cold, or painful.
• Respiratory problems: Wheezing, chest tightness, or significant trouble breathing.
Zebeta Precautions
Do not use Zebeta if you are allergic to bisoprolol or have certain heart conditions, including cardiogenic shock, severe bradycardia, second- or third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block without a pacemaker, or acute decompensated heart failure.
Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have asthma or other breathing disorders, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, or peripheral vascular disease. If you have diabetes, be aware that bisoprolol can mask the signs of low blood sugar, such as a rapid heartbeat.
Tell your doctor about all medications you take. Zebeta may interact with other blood pressure or heart medicines (such as verapamil or diltiazem), insulin or oral diabetes drugs, and certain pain medications, such as NSAIDs (ibuprofen or naproxen). Limit alcohol use, as it can dangerously lower your blood pressure and increase dizziness.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to breastfeed. Zebeta should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the risk to the fetus, as it may affect fetal growth or cause low blood sugar in the newborn. If you are breastfeeding, use Zebeta with caution. Small amounts of the medicine may pass into breast milk. Monitor nursing infants for signs like a slow heart rate or excessive sleepiness.
Take Zebeta exactly as prescribed, usually at the same time each morning. You can take it with or without food. Do not stop taking the medication suddenly, as this can cause a rapid rise in blood pressure, worsening chest pain, or even a heart attack. Your doctor will help you taper the dose gradually. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from heat and moisture, and keep out of reach of children.
