Zerviate (Cetirizine Ophthalmic Solution 0.24%) Information

Zerviate, which contains the active ingredient cetirizine, is a prescription antihistamine eye drop used to treat ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis. It is used to relieve symptoms triggered by allergens like pollen, dust, ragweed, and animal dander in adults and pediatric patients 2 years of age and older.

The mechanism of action involves blocking histamine, a natural substance in the body that triggers allergic symptoms like itching and redness. Additionally, it helps inhibit the release of additional histamine from mast cells. It reduces the activation of inflammatory cells, such as eosinophils. This targeted approach provides rapid relief of itching directly at the eye surface.

Zerviate Side Effects

Zerviate is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include eye redness (ocular hyperemia), a temporary stinging or burning sensation at the instillation site, and a short-term reduction in vision sharpness immediately after the drop is applied. Some patients may also experience a headache, nasopharyngitis (cold-like symptoms), or a feeling that something is in the eye.

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Severe Allergic Reactions: Signs include hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or significant difficulty breathing.
• Systemic Symptoms: A racing heart, fever, tremors, or extreme dizziness.
• Worsening Eye Symptoms: Intense eye pain, thick discharge (pus), or a sudden, sharp decrease in vision.

Zerviate Precautions

Do not use Zerviate if you have a known allergy to cetirizine or any of the inactive ingredients in the medication. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have active eye infections or other significant eye conditions. Zerviate is not intended to treat irritation caused by contact lenses. If your eyes are red, you should not wear contacts at all until the irritation clears.

Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. There are no known significant drug interactions between Zerviate eye drops and other medicines, foods, or alcohol. If you use multiple eye products, you should wait at least 5 minutes between each one.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. There are no adequate or well-controlled studies of Zerviate in pregnant women. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether ophthalmic cetirizine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before use. Use Zerviate exactly as your doctor tells you. Before applying Zerviate, wash your hands thoroughly. If you wear soft contact lenses, you must remove them before instilling the drops and wait at least 10 minutes before reinserting them, as the preservative can be absorbed by the lenses, causing discoloration or irritation. Tilt your head back, pull down your lower lid to form a pocket, and instill one drop without touching the dropper tip to your eye, eyelid, or any other surface to avoid contamination. If you are using single-use containers, use the liquid immediately after opening and discard the container even if some solution remains. Store the medication at room temperature (15°C to 25°C) away from moisture and direct light. Always keep Zerviate safely out of the reach of children and pets.
