Zyrtec and Equivalent
Generic Equivalent of Zyrtec
Zyrtec Information
Zyrtec (Cetirizine) is used to relieve allergic symptoms, such as hives, sneezing, a runny nose, and body itching, and eye redness, associated with various allergic conditions, including perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis, anaphylactic reactions, allergic conjunctivitis (red and itchy eyes) and chronic urticaria. Its active ingredient, cetirizine, belongs to the second-generation antihistamine class. Cetirizine works by selectively blocking the action of histamine on its receptors in the body. Histamine is a natural chemical released during allergic reactions that causes these common symptoms. By preventing histamine from binding to its receptors, cetirizine effectively reduces the allergic symptoms. Unlike some other antihistamines, cetirizine is also less likely to make you feel drowsy or dizzy as it rarely crosses the blood brain barrier. It is a fast acting antihistamine which usually starts to relieve allergy symptoms within 20 minutes and its effects last for 24 hours.
