What is Ditropan (Oxybutynin) Used For?
Ditropan (Oxybutynin) is an anticholinergic and antispasmodic agent, primarily used to
treat the symptoms of an overactive bladder, including an urgent and frequent need to urinate as well as involuntary urine leakage known as urge incontinence. It is typically used to manage bladder overactivity caused by neurological conditions such as spina bifida in individuals aged 6 and older. Also, it provides relief for conditions known as uninhibited or reflex neurogenic bladder. It may also be used in children to treat nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting).
Oxybutynin works by directly blocking acetylcholine from binding to muscarinic receptors on the detrusor muscle in the bladder wall. By preventing this chemical messenger from binding to muscle cells, this medication interrupts the signals that cause involuntary bladder contractions. Also, Ditropan exerts a direct relaxing effect on smooth muscle tissue. These actions help stop sudden bladder spasms, allow the bladder to hold larger volumes of urine, delay the urge to void, and reduce involuntary leaking.
