Minocin Information:

Minocin (Minocycline) is a tetracycline antibiotic commonly used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, skin infections, chlamydia, tick fever, and others. It is also used for gonorrhoea, syphilis, and other infections as a second-line drug in those with a penicillin allergy. It may also be used along with other medications to treat severe acne. It will not work for viral infections, such as the common cold or the flu.

Minocin works by passing directly through the bacteria membrane. It then binds to the 30s ribosomal subunit, preventing the bacteria from binding with the RNA. In doing this, it inhibits the protein synthesis of bacteria, reducing its ability to live, grow, and reproduce. Take this medication as directed. You should not use Minocin if you are allergic to other tetracycline antibiotics, or if you are pregnant, as it could harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while either you or the father are using Minocin, as it can cause permanent tooth discolouration later in the baby’s life, as well as other possible side effects. Do not use Minocin while you are breastfeeding, as the medication can pass through the breastmilk to the baby. Minocin can also make birth control pills less effective. Talk to your doctor about other birth control options. To make sure Minocin is right for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had liver disease, kidney disease, asthma, or a sulfite allergy.

Common side effects of using Minocin include numbness or tingling, hair loss, discolouration of skin or nails, dizziness or a spinning sensation, muscle or joint pain, nausea, diarrhea, or loss of appetite, swollen tongue, cough or trouble swallowing, rash or itching, or headache. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience bronchospasms (wheezing, chest tightness, trouble breathing), a seizure, signs of kidney, liver, or pancreas problems, signs of low blood cell counts, or signs of increased pressure inside your skull. If you experience any serious side effects, signs of an allergic reaction, or a severe skin reaction, seek emergency medical attention. Signs of a serious drug reaction include skin rash, fever, swollen glands, muscle aches, severe weakness, unusual bruising, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
