Trolamine salicylate works by penetrating the skin into underlying muscle and joint tissues, where it blocks the action of specific enzymes called cyclooxygenases (COX). This inhibitory action reduces the synthesis of inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins, which normally accumulate at injury sites to trigger tissue swelling and make local nerve endings extra-sensitive to pain.
