Canasa Suppositories (Generic name: Mesalamine) is an approved medication used to treat active ulcerative proctitis, a type of bowel disease. It does not cure ulcerative proctitis, but it may decrease the number of stools, the amount of mucus/blood in the stools, and the rectal bleeding caused by irritation/swelling of the colon/rectum. The active ingredient in Canasa Suppositories, is Mesalamine, also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), and is classified as an anti-inflammatory drug. Mesalamine works inside the bowel by helping to reduce inflammation and other symptoms. Canasa Suppositories may also be used to treat Crohn's disease.
