Lansoyl Jelly is an over-the-counter lubricant laxative used for the short-term relief of transient constipation. It may be used when individuals must avoid straining during bowel movements. It is a mineral oil that works solely by mechanical action in the digestive tract. After a person swallows this medication, the oil remains inside the intestinal lumen rather than being absorbed into the body. It coats the stool particles and lubricates the intestinal walls. This coating prevents the colon from reabsorbing water from fecal matter, keeping the stool soft and increasing slipperiness. As a result, the stool passes through the colon much more easily without irritating the delicate intestinal mucosa. This mechanical action appears to produce a predictable response, usually prompting a bowel movement within 6 to 8 hours. Do not take mineral oil right before going to bed.
