Lansoyl Jelly Information
Lansoyl Jelly is an over-the-counter lubricant laxative used for the short-term relief of transient constipation. It may be used when individuals must avoid straining during bowel movements. This includes individuals recovering from abdominal or pelvic surgeries, individuals managing severe hypertension or cardiovascular disease, and those healing from hernias. It is a mineral oil that works solely by mechanical action in the digestive tract. After a person swallows this medication, the oil remains inside the intestinal lumen rather than being absorbed into the body. It coats the stool particles and lubricates the intestinal walls. This coating prevents the colon from reabsorbing water from fecal matter, keeping the stool soft and increasing slipperiness. As a result, the stool passes through the colon much more easily without irritating the delicate intestinal mucosa. This mechanical action appears to produce a predictable response, usually prompting a bowel movement within 6 to 8 hours. Do not take mineral oil right before going to bed.
Lansoyl Jelly Side Effects
Although rare, this medication may cause side effects that usually remain confined to the digestive tract. It may cause anal leakage, diarrhea, and mild abdominal discomfort. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.
Seek immediate medical attention if you notice serious side effects, especially allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat. Inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.
Lansoyl Jelly Precautions
Do not use this lubricant laxative if you are allergic to mineral oil or other ingredients in Lansoyl Jelly. Before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor about any medical conditions you previously or currently have, including the following:
• Difficulty swallowing;
• Obstructed abdomen
It is not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age unless advised by a doctor. Mineral oil may significantly alter how your body processes some other substances in your digestive tract. Stool softeners like docusate, when used with mineral oil, can break it down into tiny droplets, allowing your intestinal wall to absorb the oil into your systemic circulation. These can accumulate permanently in your lymph nodes, spleen, and liver, potentially forming painful inflammatory masses called granulomas. Mineral oil can also impair the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins when used long-term, causing vitamin deficiency. Therefore, inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal products and vitamin supplements, to determine whether it is safe to use this laxative with them. It is generally recommended to take other medications at least 2 hours before or after taking Lansoyl Jelly. This use of this lubricant laxative is not recommended during pregnancy.
Regular use of mineral oil impairs the mother's nutrient absorption, which appears to directly threaten the developing fetus. Specifically, a drop in maternal Vitamin K absorption can cause a dangerous bleeding disorder in the newborn baby. It should not be used by breastfeeding women unless recommended by a doctor after careful evaluation of its risks and benefits. Store Lansoyl Jelly at controlled room temperature, ideally between 15°C and 30°C, and keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
