Onglyza (Saxagliptin) Information
Onglyza, which contains the active ingredient saxagliptin, is an oral medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is prescribed when diet and exercise alone are insufficient and may be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications, such as metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin. Onglyza is taken by mouth once daily and is intended to support steady blood glucose control throughout the day.
The mechanism of action of saxagliptin involves inhibiting the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4). This enzyme usually breaks down incretin hormones, which are released after meals and help regulate blood sugar levels. By blocking DPP-4, saxagliptin increases incretin hormone levels, leading to increased insulin release when blood sugar is high and reduced hepatic glucose production. Because its effects are glucose-dependent, Onglyza has a low risk of causing hypoglycemia when used alone.
