Optimmune, which contains the active ingredient cyclosporin, is a prescription veterinary medication. It is specifically indicated for the management of chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), commonly known as dry eye, and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK), also known as pannus, in dogs. The medication is a sterile, preservative-free ointment. Although initial improvement in tear production can be seen within 10 days, it may take up to 6 weeks of consistent treatment to achieve the maximum effect.

The mechanism of action involves inhibiting the activation of T-cells and other inflammatory cells in the eye. In dogs with KCS or CSK, the immune system mistakenly attacks the tear glands, leading to inflammation and reduced tear production. This is a lifelong condition, and this medication manages the condition; it's not a cure. Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant and immunomodulator. By decreasing immune-mediated swelling, the medication allows the tear glands to recover and increase the production of natural tears.
