What is Uroxatral (Alfuzosin Extended Release) Used For?
Uroxatral (Alfuzosin Extended Release) is an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist,
used to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that occurs as men age. Occasionally, it may be used for related urinary issues, such as helping facilitate urinary flow during acute urinary retention or enhancing the spontaneous passage of very small ureteral stones.
Alfuzosin works by relaxing the smooth muscle tissue in the prostate, bladder neck, and urethra. It does this by binding to alpha-1 adrenergic receptors on these muscle cells and blocking the body’s natural signals that tell them to contract. When these receptors are blocked, the muscle relaxes, and the urinary channel opens wider. This reduces resistance to urine flow, making it easier to start urinating and empty the bladder. It helps with the symptomatic management of benign prostatic hyperplasia by relieving urinary muscle contractions rather than reducing the physical size of the prostate tissue itself.
