Yaz Plus Information

Yaz Plus is a combination oral contraceptive medication that contains three active ingredients: drospirenone (a progestin), ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen), and levomefolate calcium (an active form of folic acid). It is primarily used to prevent pregnancy. Additionally, it is approved for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in women at least 14 years of age who desire contraception and have started menstruating. It is also used to treat the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in women who have chosen oral contraception as their method of birth control. The levomefolate calcium component aims to improve folate status in women, which is particularly important for reducing the risk of neural tube defects during pregnancy, as well as for those that may occur after discontinuing the medication. Yaz Plus works by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary). It also causes changes in the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to penetrate the uterus, and alters the lining of the uterus, making it less receptive to a fertilized egg. Drospirenone in Yaz Plus may also help alleviate androgen-related skin problems, such as acne, by lowering androgen levels.
