Yaz Plus Information

Yaz Plus is a combination oral contraceptive medication that contains three active ingredients: drospirenone (a progestin), ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen), and levomefolate calcium (an active form of folic acid). It is primarily used to prevent pregnancy. Additionally, it is approved for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in women at least 14 years of age who desire contraception and have started menstruating. It is also used to treat the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in women who have chosen oral contraception as their method of birth control. The levomefolate calcium component aims to improve folate status in women, which is particularly important for reducing the risk of neural tube defects during pregnancy, as well as for those that may occur after discontinuing the medication. Yaz Plus works by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary). It also causes changes in the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to penetrate the uterus, and alters the lining of the uterus, making it less receptive to a fertilized egg. Drospirenone in Yaz Plus may also help alleviate androgen-related skin problems, such as acne, by lowering androgen levels.

Yaz Plus Side Effects

The most common side effects of Yaz Plus may include headache, nausea, mood changes, breast tenderness, abdominal cramps, bloating, and irregular menstrual periods (spotting or breakthrough bleeding). Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Blood clots: Symptoms like sudden vision changes, chest pain, pain and swelling in one leg, sudden shortness of breath, severe headache, slurred speech, or weakness/numbness in an arm or leg.
• Depression or significant mood changes.
• Gallbladder problems.
• High blood pressure.
• High potassium levels (hyperkalemia): Symptoms may include muscle pain or cramps, weakness, chest pain, or heart palpitations.
• Liver problems: Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, pale stools, or persistent nausea and vomiting.
• Migraine headaches.
• Severe allergic reaction: Rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or trouble breathing.

Yaz Plus Precautions

Do not use Yaz Plus if you are allergic to drospirenone, ethinyl estradiol, levomefolate calcium, or any of its ingredients. Do not use Yaz Plus if you have a history of or current blood clots, a history of heart attack or stroke, severe hypertension (high blood pressure), severe dyslipoproteinemia (abnormal lipid levels), diabetes with vascular involvement, active liver disease, kidney disease, adrenal disease, known or suspected breast cancer or other estrogen-dependent cancers, undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding, migraine with focal aura, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Smoking, especially if you are over 35 years old, significantly increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events with hormonal contraceptives. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Yaz Plus can interact with several medications, including drugs that can increase potassium levels (e.g., ACE inhibitors, ARBs, potassium-sparing diuretics), certain antibiotics (e.g., rifampin), antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole), HIV/AIDS medications (e.g., protease inhibitors), and anti-seizure medications (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine), as they may decrease the effectiveness of Yaz Plus. Also, herbal products containing St. John's Wort should be avoided. Do not use Yaz Plus with Hepatitis C virus combination drug regimens containing ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, with or without dasabuvir, as this combination is contraindicated due to a significantly increased risk of liver damage. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Yaz Plus is contraindicated during pregnancy. If you become pregnant while taking Yaz Plus, stop taking it immediately and contact your doctor. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Yaz Plus is not recommended for use during breastfeeding, as hormones may pass into breast milk and potentially affect the nursing infant or reduce milk production. The safety and effectiveness of Yaz Plus for premenarcheal girls (those who have not started menstruating) have not been established.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Yaz Plus is typically taken once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Each pack contains 24 pink active tablets (hormone-containing) and four light orange inert tablets (levomefolate calcium only). Follow the order of tablets as directed on the package. It is crucial to take the pills consistently. If you miss pills, the risk of pregnancy increases; refer to the package insert or consult your healthcare provider for specific instructions on missed doses. Use a backup method of birth control (e.g., condoms) for the first 7 days of the first cycle or if you miss pills. Regular blood pressure monitoring is recommended. Store Yaz Plus at room temperature. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
