Alphagan P and Equivalent
Generic Equivalent of Alphagan P
Alphagan P (Brimonidine) Information
Alphagan P, which contains the active ingredient brimonidine, is an eye medication used to lower elevated eye pressure in people with glaucoma or ocular hypertension, which are conditions that can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. It is administered as eye drops and can be used alone or in combination with other eye pressure-lowering medications. Alphagan P is typically used once to three times daily, as directed by your doctor, and helps protect your vision by reducing the fluid pressure inside the eye.
The mechanism of action of brimonidine involves stimulating specific receptors in the eye called alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, which decrease the production of fluid (aqueous humour) in the eye and increase its drainage.
Alphagan P Side Effects
Alphagan P is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur. Commonly reported effects include eye redness, burning, itching, or a dry feeling after application. Some people may experience blurred vision, watery eyes, or a sensation of a foreign object in the eye. Mild headache, fatigue, or drowsiness can also occur when small amounts enter the bloodstream.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Severe allergic reactions, including rash, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing;
• Severe eye pain, swelling, or signs of infection;
• Sudden or significant changes in vision
Alphagan P Precautions
Do not use Alphagan P if you are allergic to brimonidine or any ingredient in the eye drops. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have heart disease, low blood pressure, depression, kidney or liver problems, or asthma. Do not use Alphagan P if you are currently taking or have taken a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressant within the last 14 days.
Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Brimonidine may interact with certain blood pressure medications, antidepressants, sedatives, or other eye drops.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Alphagan P should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed, and breastfeeding should be discussed with your doctor, as it is not fully known whether brimonidine passes into breast milk.
Use Alphagan P exactly as prescribed. Wash your hands before use, tilt your head back, and instill the recommended number of drops into the affected eye(s). Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or eyelid. After instilling the drops, gently close your eye and press lightly on the inner corner for 1–2 minutes to reduce systemic absorption. Do not stop using the drops suddenly without consulting your doctor. Store at room temperature, away from heat and light, and keep out of reach of children.
