Amitiza Information
Amitiza (lubiprostone) is a medication classified as a chloride channel activator. It is used to treat several chronic constipation conditions in adults: chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC), irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C), specifically in women 18 years and older, and opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in adults with chronic non-cancer pain. Constipation occurs when bowel movements are infrequent or difficult to pass. Amitiza works by increasing the secretion of fluid into the intestine. It does this by activating specific chloride channels (ClC-2 channels) in the lining of the small intestine. This increased fluid secretion helps to soften the stool, facilitate its passage, and promote spontaneous bowel movements, thereby relieving constipation symptoms and associated discomfort.
Amitiza Side Effects
The most common side effects of Amitiza may include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain or discomfort, abdominal distension, headache, and flatulence. Nausea can be exceptionally bothersome and is often reduced by taking the medication with food and water. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Feeling dizzy or lightheaded, or fainting (syncope);
• Severe abdominal pain that is new or worsening;
• Severe diarrhea that is persistent or worsening;
• Shortness of breath or chest tightness occurring within an hour of taking the dose;
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or rash (signs of an allergic reaction).
Amitiza Precautions
Do not use Amitiza if you are allergic to lubiprostone or any of its ingredients. Also, do not use this medication if you have a known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction (a blockage in your intestines). Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have severe diarrhea, liver problems (as dose adjustment may be necessary for moderate to severe impairment), or any other serious medical conditions. It is essential to rule out any underlying causes of constipation, such as mechanical obstruction, before starting Amitiza. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Significant drug interactions with Amitiza are uncommon due to its minimal systemic absorption; however, always inform your doctor about all current medications to ensure safe use. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant before using Amitiza. While animal studies suggest potential risks, human data are limited. Amitiza should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed before using Amitiza. It is unknown if lubiprostone passes into breast milk; discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. The safety and effectiveness of Amitiza have not been established in pediatric patients. Caution is advised when prescribing Amitiza to patients with severe liver impairment, and dose reduction is typically recommended.
Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Amitiza comes as an oral capsule. Swallow the capsule whole. Do not crush, chew, or break the capsule, as this can affect the medication's release and effectiveness. It is generally recommended to take Amitiza with food and water to help minimize the risk of nausea. Take Amitiza at the same time(s) each day to help you remember. Consistency in taking your dose is essential for optimal results. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose; then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Store Amitiza at room temperature (20°C to 25°C or 68°F to 77°F). Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
