Amitiza (lubiprostone) is a medication classified as a chloride channel activator. It is used to treat several chronic constipation conditions in adults: chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC), irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C), specifically in women 18 years and older, and opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in adults with chronic non-cancer pain. Constipation occurs when bowel movements are infrequent or difficult to pass. Amitiza works by increasing the secretion of fluid into the intestine. It does this by activating specific chloride channels (ClC-2 channels) in the lining of the small intestine. This increased fluid secretion helps to soften the stool, facilitate its passage, and promote spontaneous bowel movements, thereby relieving constipation symptoms and associated discomfort.
