What is Aveeno Used For?

Aveeno is a group of topical skin protectants, available in different formulations, used for temporary protection and relief of minor skin irritation and itching. Its anti-itch lotion formulation is used in adults and children aged 2 years and older for the temporary relief of itching and pain associated with minor skin irritations. This includes bug bites, sunburns, minor scrapes, cuts, and rashes caused by contact with plants like poison ivy or poison oak. It is also formulated to help dry up oozing, weeping skin lesions. Its baby soothing bath treatment is used in children to temporarily soothe, protect, and relieve minor skin irritation and itching resulting from eczema flare-ups, localized rashes, insect bites, and allergic reactions to poison ivy, oak, or sumac.

Likewise, its baby soothing relief moisture cream and baby calming comfort lotion are both used in children to temporarily protect and soothe dry, sensitive, chafed, chapped, or cracked skin, particularly skin vulnerable to the drying effects of wind and cold weather. The baby wash & shampoo is used for daily personal hygiene in children, specifically to gently cleanse a baby's delicate hair, scalp, and body without over-drying or irritating sensitive skin. Furthermore, the Protect + Hydrate lotion is formulated to prevent sunburn and, when used in combination with other sun protection measures, to reduce the risk of early skin aging and ultraviolet-induced skin cancers.

Depending on the formulation, Aveeno products contain various active ingredients such as dimethicone and colloidal oatmeal, pramoxine hydrochloride, calamine, and chemical sunscreen filters (avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene). Aveeno works through the actions of dimethicone and colloidal oatmeal by establishing a water-resistant seal over the skin surface that traps moisture inside and keeps irritants out. Its natural oat proteins help to maintain the ideal acidic pH on the skin, thereby stabilizing the skin's microbiome and preventing further irritation. Its specialized oat components contain specialized antioxidant compounds called avenanthramides, which suppress the inflammatory signals that trigger itching and directly calm local nerve endings.

In some formulations, it also works through pramoxine hydrochloride, which physically blocks sodium channels in local nerve fibers to stop itch and pain signals from traveling to the brain. At the same time, calamine dries up oozing fluid and crusts over exposed tissue. In some other Aveeno formulations, its chemical filters (avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene) absorb ultraviolet radiation and safely transform that destructive energy into harmless heat before it can damage cellular DNA and lead to skin cancer.

Always use these topical products exactly as directed on the package label. For more product details, view the full product information.

What Side Effects Can Aveeno Cause?

Aveeno products are generally well-tolerated as the ingredients are mostly inert and primarily sit on the outer layer of the skin. However, like any topical product, some individuals experience transient adverse effects such as burning, stinging, redness, or irritation.

Stop using Aveeno products and seek immediate medical attention if you notice signs of an allergic reaction, such as breathing difficulties, body rash, itching, hives, skin blistering, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat. Inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Warnings

Do not use these topical products if you are allergic to any of the active or inactive ingredients in these products. Aveeno products, particularly the baby creams, soothing bath treatments, and anti-itch lotions, should not be applied over deeply broken skin or skin areas with deep puncture wounds or serious burns. Doing so can cause severe irritation, slow healing, or increase the risk of infection. Also, when using the lotion, avoid applying an airtight bandage or heavy covering over the applied area to avoid excessive moisture buildup and skin irritation. Stop using these products and consult a doctor if your skin condition worsens, if symptoms persist for more than 7 days, or if symptoms clear up and recur within a few days.

It is advised to apply any prescription topical medications to your skin before applying Aveeno products, as dimethicone in the moisture creams and the colloidal oatmeal gel-film can create a physical, water-resistant barrier and physically block the prescription medication from penetrating the skin. Allow prescription medications to fully absorb before applying Aveeno products over top. These products are generally safe for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women. However, consult your doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The anti-itch lotion is not recommended for use in children younger than 2 years.
