Aygestin and Equivalent
Generic Equivalent of Aygestin
Aygestin (Norethindrone) Information
Aygestin, which contains the active ingredient norethindrone, is a synthetic progestin used for several gynecological conditions, including endometriosis, abnormal uterine bleeding, secondary amenorrhea, and certain contraceptive purposes. In endometriosis, Aygestin helps reduce pelvic pain, painful periods, and other related symptoms by suppressing the growth of endometrial tissue. It may also help manage heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding. The medicine is taken by mouth, usually once daily, and regular use ensures effective symptom control.
The mechanism of action of norethindrone involves progestogenic suppression of estrogen-driven endometrial growth. By acting like natural progesterone, it decreases endometrial tissue growth, reduces menstrual bleeding, and can suppress ovulation in some cases. In endometriosis, this helps shrink and calm endometrial tissue outside the uterus, reducing pain and inflammation. The effects are dose-dependent, allowing the medicine to treat different gynecological conditions effectively.
Aygestin Side Effects
Aygestin is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur. Commonly reported effects include headaches or migraines, breast tenderness or swelling, mild nausea or stomach upset, mood changes such as irritability or low mood, fluid retention or weight gain, irregular menstrual bleeding or spotting, and minor skin changes, such as acne. These effects often improve over time as the body adjusts to the hormone.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Severe abdominal pain or liver problems, including yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, persistent nausea
• Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing, or rash
• Severe mood changes or depression, including thoughts of self-harm
• Signs of blood clots, including leg swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath
• Sudden vision changes, double vision, or bulging of the eyes
• Unusual or heavy vaginal bleeding
Aygestin Precautions
Do not use Aygestin if you are allergic to norethindrone or any ingredient in the medication. Aygestin is not recommended for people with a history of blood clots, liver disease, hormone-sensitive cancers, or unexplained vaginal bleeding. Before starting treatment, tell your doctor about your complete medical history, particularly if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, migraines, depression, or a history of clotting disorders.
Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Certain drugs, such as enzyme-inducing medications (e.g., rifampicin and some anticonvulsants) and herbal products such as St. John’s wort, may reduce Aygestin’s effectiveness. Do not use hormonal contraceptives with other progestins, unless advised by your doctor.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Avoid Norethindrone during pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, discuss potential risks with your doctor, as norethindrone passes into breast milk and may affect the infant.
Take Aygestin exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with food or at the same time each day. Do not skip doses and take the medication consistently for the best results. Smoking significantly increases the risk of severe blood clots while taking this medication. It is strongly advised to quit smoking during treatment. Do not stop Aygestin suddenly without consulting your doctor, as symptoms may return. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light, and keep out of reach of children.
