What is Caltrate (Calcium Carbonate & Vitamin D) Used For?

Caltrate (Calcium Carbonate & Vitamin D) is an over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplement used primarily to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiencies. It is used in the management of osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and rickets to help preserve bone density and reduce fracture risks. It is also prescribed for individuals with high calcium demands or poor absorption, such as postmenopausal individuals, elderly patients, pregnant or nursing mothers, and people on chronic systemic corticosteroid therapy.

Caltrate works by increasing the body's calcium supply and ensuring it is absorbed into the bloodstream. Stomach acid first breaks down the calcium carbonate salt, releasing usable calcium ions into the digestive tract. Vitamin D3 then binds to specific receptors in the small intestine, triggering cells to produce transport proteins that pull free calcium ions across the intestinal lining and into the blood. Once in the bloodstream, the extra calcium prevents the body from removing calcium from the bones and provides the raw materials needed to rebuild and strengthen bone tissue.

Always take this supplement exactly as recommended by your healthcare provider. For more information about its use, check out its product information.
