Colofac Information

Colofac (Mebeverine Hydrochloride) is primarily indicated for the symptomatic treatment of irritable bowel syndrome and other conditions involving spasms of the gastrointestinal tract, such as chronic irritable colon, spastic constipation, and mucous colitis. Mebeverine hydrochloride is the active ingredient in Colofac. It belongs to the pharmacological class of antispasmodics, specifically a direct-acting smooth muscle relaxant. It works by directly acting on the smooth muscle cells in the gut wall. By regulating calcium channels and potentially affecting how muscle fibers respond to nerve signals, it inhibits bowel involuntary contractions (spasms). Notably, it achieves this without interfering with the normal movement (peristalsis) of the digestive system, and since it isn't an anticholinergic, it typically avoids side effects like blurred vision or dry mouth.

Colofac Side Effects

Colofac Precautions

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to mebeverine or any other ingredients in Colofac. Before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor about any medical conditions you previously or currently have, including the following:

• Liver disease;
• Paralytic ileus

Mebeverine is generally not recommended during pregnancy. It is usually only considered if the potential benefits to the mother significantly outweigh the theoretical risks to the fetus. While animal data suggest breastmilk excretion might be low, a risk to the nursing infant cannot be entirely excluded. Consequently, mebeverine is typically not recommended for use during breastfeeding. While there are no significant drug-to-drug interactions reported for Mebeverine, it is still important to tell your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are using before starting this medication. Take Colofac tablets/capsules as directed by your doctor or as stated in the medication pack. The typical tablet dose is one 135 mg tablet, taken 3 times a day, roughly 20 minutes before your 3 main meals. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water rather than chewing or crushing it. If you use the 200 mg modified-release capsules, reduce your intake to one capsule twice daily. Ensure you maintain a consistent schedule to achieve optimal symptom control.
