Firmagon Information

Firmagon (Degarelix Acetate) is primarily used for the treatment of advanced, hormone-dependent prostate cancer in adult men. Its active ingredient is degarelix acetate, and it belongs to the class of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonists. The medication works by directly and reversibly binding to GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland, thereby blocking the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This blockade effectively shuts down the signal to the testicles, leading to a rapid suppression of testosterone production. This mechanism is crucial because advanced prostate cancer is a disease where malignant cells in the prostate gland rely on testosterone to fuel their growth and spread. By quickly lowering testosterone to castrate levels without the initial hormonal spike (flare) often seen with other therapies, Firmagon helps starve cancer cells of their primary fuel source, thereby slowing disease progression, shrinking tumors, and alleviating symptoms associated with the cancer's spread.

Firmagon Precautions

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to degarelix, other ingredients in Firmagon, or any other medicines. Before you start taking this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any prior or current medical conditions, including the following:
• Anemia (low red blood cell count);
• Bone problems such as osteoporosis;
• Diabetes;
• Electrolyte imbalance, such as low potassium in the blood;
• Heart disease, including a family history of sudden cardiac death;
• Liver problems;
• Stroke

Do not drive or operate machinery while taking Firmagon until you know how it affects you, as it can cause drowsiness and dizziness. This medication is not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. It is also not for use in children. It’s also worth noting that this medication can impair fertility in males due to the suppression of testosterone, though this is sometimes reversible after stopping treatment. Taking degarelix alongside drugs that also prolong the QT interval (such as amiodarone, sotalol, or quinidine) significantly increases the risk of dangerous heart arrhythmias. Therefore, before taking this medication, it is important to inform your doctor about any medications you are currently taking, including herbal products and supplements, to determine whether they may interact with Firmagon.

Firmagon is available as an injectable solution in different dosage strengths. This medication is to be administered as an injection subcutaneously (i.e., below the skin) in the abdominal area by your doctor or qualified healthcare professional. This dosage schedule may change based on your doctor's discretion. Ensure the injection is given at a site free of pressure from belts, waistbands, or other clothing. Also, this injection should not be given near the ribs and should not be given at the same site each time to reduce discomfort. Ensure you take this medication regularly to get the best effect. Store this medication at 25 °C, keep it away from sunlight and moisture, and keep it out of children's reach.
