Flagystatin Information

Flagystatin (Metronidazole/Nystatin) is used to treat and reduce two infections of the vagina at the same time. These infections are caused by a mixture of certain bacteria and fungi. The first ingredient, metronidazole, works by killing certain bacteria. The second ingredient, nystatin, works by killing certain fungi. Antibacterial and antifungal drugs, like Flagystatin, treat only bacterial and fungal infections. They do not treat viral infections.

Flagystatin Side Effects

The most common side effect of Flagystatin may include slight burning feeling in your vagina, darker urine; constipation; dry mouth; bitter or metallic taste in your mouth; indigestion; loss of appetite; nausea; depression; headache; trouble sleeping; hearing loss; noise such as buzzing in the ear. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Allergic reaction (swelling of the mouth, throat, lips, tongue, face, arms and legs, or hands, trouble breathing or swallowing, itching, rash, red spots and blisters);
• Diarrhea;
• Decrease in some blood cells (fever; other sign of infection such as chills, body aches, sore throat; or extreme tiredness);
• Irritation in or around your vagina;
• Meningitis (inflammation of the thin tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord with symptoms such as a sudden, high fever, a severe headache, a stiff neck, confusion, nausea and vomiting);
• Nervous system problems (trouble moving, seizures, tingling feeling on the skin);
• Palpitation abnormal heartbeat, like a fast heartbeat or skipped beats and chest pain;
• Severe liver problems (nausea, fatigue, yellowing of the skin and eyes, abdominal pain).

Flagystatin Precautions

Do not use Flagystatin if you are allergic to metronidazole or nystatin or any of the other ingredients in Flagystatin. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history including if you are pregnant, are breastfeeding (Metronidazole passes into breast milk and may affect your baby); have liver problems; have nervous system problems; have a blood problem; have a thyroid problem; have underactive adrenal glands. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Flagystatin and other medications. Talk to your doctor if you are using birth control options as some of them may not work well when you are using Flagystatin. Your liver function may need to be monitored frequently while you are being treated with metronidazole and afterwards. Do not use other vaginal injection or irrigation products, menstrual tampons, and soaps, douches and washes for your vagina while you are using Flagystatin. Do not drink alcohol while you are using Flagystatin. Do not drive any type of vehicle or use any tools or machinery if you feel confused or dizzy, have hallucinations; have a seizure; have an eye problem, like blurred or double vision.
