Minims Tetracaine (Tetracaine hydrochloride) Information
Minims Tetracaine, which contains the active ingredient tetracaine hydrochloride, is a prescription local anesthetic used to numb the surface of the eye during short-term medical procedures. It is commonly used for measuring eye pressure (tonometry), removing foreign bodies or sutures, and preparing for minor eye surgeries. It is available in two concentrations: 0.5% and 1%. The anesthetic effect begins rapidly, often within 10 to 30 seconds, and typically lasts between 10 and 20 minutes.
The mechanism of action involves reversibly blocking the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses. It prevents the increase in sodium permeability necessary for an action potential (nerve signal), effectively stabilizing the nerve membrane and stopping pain signals from reaching the brain.
Minims Tetracaine Side Effects
Minims Tetracaine is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as the medication takes effect. Commonly reported effects include transient stinging or burning sensations (which may last up to 30 seconds), blurred vision, and watery eyes.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Inform your eye specialist immediately if you notice:
• Allergic Reactions: Symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.
• CNS Toxicity: Though rare with eye drops, systemic absorption can cause symptoms like dizziness, blurred vision, tinnitus, or numbness around the mouth.
• Corneal Damage: Prolonged use or repeated application can lead to severe keratitis, corneal swelling (edema), or permanent scarring and vision loss.
• Severe Ocular Reactions: Severe stinging, throbbing eye pain, or significant redness.
Minims Tetracaine Precautions
Do not use Minims Tetracaine if you have a known allergy to tetracaine hydrochloride or other ester-type local anesthetics. It is not intended for long-term use or for a patient's self-administration. It should not be used in premature babies due to their immature enzyme systems. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have heart conditions, thyroid issues, epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, eye inflammation, or low cholinesterase levels.
Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements (such as St. John's wort). Minims Tetracaine has significant interactions with many drugs, especially with sulphonamides (a group of antibiotics) and other local anesthetics like lidocaine.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. It is unknown if Minims Tetracaine is safe for use during pregnancy. This medication should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is unknown if tetracaine hydrochloride passes into breastmilk or if it may harm a nursing infant. To minimize systemic absorption, apply pressure to the tear duct after use.
Your doctor will administer this medication as required. Do not administer by yourself. To reduce systemic absorption, they may ask you to press on the inner corner of your eye for at least one minute after the drop is placed. Do not touch or rub your eye until the numbness has completely worn off, as you could scratch your cornea without feeling it. Your doctor may apply an eye patch for protection. Avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision is clear. Remove contact lenses before use, and do not reinsert them until the numbness has passed. Protect from light. Store in the refrigerator between 2-8°C. Discard each single-use unit immediately after use. Keep them safely out of reach of children.
