What Dosage Strengths Are Available for Nootropil and Generic Piracetam?

Nootropil is available in the following strengths:

Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dose and strength for you. Order the strength prescribed by your healthcare provider.

What is Nootropil (Piracetam) Used For?

Nootropil (Piracetam) is a cyclic derivative of GABA (though it does not bind directly to GABA receptors) primarily used in combination with other medicines to treat cortical myoclonus. This nervous system disorder causes muscles, particularly in the arms and legs, to jerk or twitch uncontrollably. It is also used to treat cognitive impairments associated with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and post-stroke recovery. It has also been suggested for use in cases of dyslexia, vertigo, brain injury, and Raynaud's phenomenon.

While the exact biological process by which this medication works is not fully understood, its primary functions remain the protection of brain tissue and the regulation of muscle control. Specifically, it focuses on the cerebral cortex, the part of the brain that governs your thoughts, reasoning, perception, and physical actions. It is believed to protect this area of the brain by helping it withstand oxygen deprivation (hypoxia) more effectively. By protecting and modulating the nervous system's signaling, this medication helps stabilize brain activity. This stabilization is what allows piracetam to help control and reduce the sudden, involuntary muscle movements associated with myoclonus.

Always be sure to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. For more information about its use, check out its product monograph.

What Side Effects Can Nootropil or Generic Piracetam Cause?

Nootropil can cause a variety of side effects, although not everyone who takes the medicine will experience them. The more common side effects, which affect fewer than one in ten people, are weight gain and feeling nervous or shaky (hyperkinesia). You may also feel sleepy or drowsy (somnolence), which can make it dangerous to drive or operate tools and machinery. Other reported side effects include stomach pain, diarrhea, feeling or being sick, headaches, weakness, or difficulty sleeping. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

Serious side effects may include:
• Allergic reactions such as hives, skin blistering, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing
• Nervous system problems such as hallucinations, confusion, seizures, difficulty balancing or unsteadiness when you are standing up (ataxia), anxiety, agitation, restlessness, and depression;

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms. It is very important not to stop taking this medication suddenly because doing so can cause your symptoms, such as muscle jerking and twitching, to return or worsen (rebound myoclonus or seizures). Your doctor will usually recommend reducing the dose gradually if you need to stop the treatment. Inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Warnings

Do not use this medication if you have:
• An allergic reaction to piracetam, or any other ingredients of Nootropil;
• Bleeding disorders or active cerebral hemorrhage;
• End-stage renal disease / severe kidney disease (creatinine clearance under 20 mL/min);
• Huntington's Chorea

Caution is also advised when using this medication in individuals with some medical conditions such as underlying bleeding risk or thyroid disorders. Older adults taking this medication should also be monitored closely because their declining kidney function requires age- and clearance-adjusted dosages. Also, if you are on a controlled sodium diet, you should be aware that high daily doses of this medicine contain enough sodium to no longer be considered sodium-free. You should also be cautious when driving or operating machinery, as Nootropil can cause side effects such as drowsiness that may impair your ability to perform these tasks safely. If you are planning to have any surgery or dental treatment, you must inform your surgeon performing the procedure that you are taking this medication due to its antiplatelet effects.

Nootropil can interact with thyroid hormones like thyroxine or liothyronine, and in some cases, this combination has led to confusion and sleep disorders. Other blood-thinning or antiplatelet drugs, including clopidogrel, cilostazol, prasugrel, aspirin, or oral anticoagulants, may have their effects intensified when taken with piracetam, which could increase the risk of bleeding. Therefore, before using this medication, inform your doctor of any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal medicines and supplements, to determine whether it is safe to use with Nootropil.

Nootropil is generally not recommended during pregnancy and is contraindicated in pregnant women unless clearly necessary. If you are taking this medicine, you should use effective contraception to avoid becoming pregnant. If you think you might be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must talk to your doctor immediately. Similarly, this medication is contraindicated during breastfeeding as piracetam is excreted into human breast milk. Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
