Norlevo Information
Norlevo (Levonorgestrel) is used to prevent pregnancy within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse. This drug is for emergency contraception and not for long-term use. Norlevo prevents pregnancy from happening when taken within 12 hours and no later than 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. Progestins like Levonorgestrel stop your ovaries from releasing an egg, prevent sperm from fertilizing any egg you have already released, and stop a fertilized egg from attaching itself to your womb lining. Norlevo only stops a pregnancy before it is established. The drug will not work if you are already pregnant.
Norlevo Side Effects
The most common side effects of Norlevo may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, headache, and lower abdominal pain. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching, or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat
Norlevo Precautions
Do not use Norlevo if you are allergic to Levonorgestrel or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have Unexplained vaginal bleeding, Breast cancer, An ectopic pregnancy, An infection in your fallopian tubes, A severe digestive disease that impairs the absorption of food and medications, A family history of blood clotting, Severe liver problems, Crohn’s disease, think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Norlevo and other medications, such as phenytoin, rifabutin, ritonavir, griseofulvin, St. John’s wort, cyclosporin, etc. Do not use Norlevo if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. This drug is for preventing pregnancy and should not be used when pregnant. Do not use Norlevo while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Small amounts of Levonorgestrel pass into breast milk. It is advisable to breastfeed immediately before taking Norlevo tablets and avoid nursing for at least 8 hours afterward. The milk should be expressed and discarded the first 8 hours after dosing. This drug is not recommended for use in children. The safety and effectiveness of this drug in women between 14 and 16 years of age have not been established.
Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take this drug as a single dose as soon as possible and preferably within 12 hours after unprotected sex. Using this drug after 72 hours of unprotected sex is ineffective as you may already be pregnant. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. You should only take Norlevo as an emergency contraception and not as regular contraception. Using this drug more than once in a menstrual cycle is likely to disrupt your cycle. If you vomit within two hours of taking Norlevo, you may need another dose, as the first one may not have been completely absorbed. This medicine may cause dizziness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how the drug affects you. After you have taken this medicine, if you want to have sex, use other contraceptive methods because Norlevo will not stop pregnancy from further unprotected sex. Your doctor may advise using a barrier contraception method until your next period. If your period is more than five days late or is unusually light or unusually heavy, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible. Store this medication in a cool and dry place below 300C. Keep it out of the reach of children.
