Pirfenex (generic: Pirfenidone, also called Esbriet in the US) is a prescription drug that is used to relieve some of the symptoms of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is scarring, hardening or stiffening of the lungs with unknown cause though it appears to be an inflammatory condition mainly affecting people from the age of 50 to 70 years. This makes breathing increasingly difficult and even labored. The rate of progress of the disease is variable: in some sufferers progress is slow yet in others rapid. Pirfenex helps to slow down the process of fibrosis and also reduces inflammation. Pirfenex should always be taken exactly as your doctor instructs.
The side effects of Pirfenex tend to fall into two categories. They are gastric side effects and sensitivities. The gastric side effects of Pirfenex most commonly reported are decrease in appetite often leading to significant and sudden weight loss, bloating or stomach cramps, nausea and heart burn. Increase in certain chemicals found in the liver is also common. Many of these side effects can be prevented or ameliorated by taking Pirfenex with or after food. Taking Pirfenex may increase sensitivities particularly to sunlight. Other side effects include jaundice, increased sensitivity to light in both skin and eyes, itchiness and occasionally hives which would indicate an allergy to Pirfenex or one of its ingredients. Some patients experience drowsiness or dizziness when embarking upon Pirfenex treatment. Do not operate machinery, drive or undertake activities that require a high degree of alertness until you are entirely sure you are not affected and avoid alcohol. A severe and sudden allergic reaction and can occur when taking Pirfenex or any other medicine. If you experience sudden swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty in swallowing or breathing seek medical attention urgently.
Do not take Pirfenex if you are allergic to pirfenidone, titanium dioxide or any other ingredient in Pirfenex tablets. Care should be taken by patients taking Pirfenex that they limit their sun exposure and/or to take adequate precautions against sun burn such as wearing high factor sun block, covering skin with light clothing and avoiding sun beds and solaria. For patients taking Pirfenex who experience a skin rash due to increased light sensitivity treatment must be suspended until the rash has subsided. Caution should be exercised when prescribing Pirfenex to elderly patients and patients are under weight. Patients with liver or kidney dysfunctions should not take Pirfenex unless closely monitored by their physician. Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers should not take it. Pirfenex can interfere with the actions of other drugs you may be taking so it is important to inform your doctor of any and all prescribed or over the counter drugs you take. Pirfenex should not be used by patients taking CYP1A2 inhibitors such as fluvoxamine which is used to treat a range of anxiety disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder.
