Prempro Information

Prempro (Conjugated Estrogens + Medroxyprogesterone) is a medication used mainly to treat moderate to severe symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and night sweats. It is also used to help prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who are at significant risk and cannot take other treatments. The medication is meant for women who still have their uterus, as it combines estrogen therapy with a progestin to protect the uterine lining. Prempro is a hormone replacement therapy whose active ingredients are conjugated estrogens and medroxyprogesterone acetate. Conjugated estrogens belong to the estrogen class of hormones, while medroxyprogesterone is a synthetic form of progesterone, a progestin. During menopause, the ovaries stop producing adequate levels of estrogen and progesterone. This hormonal drop can cause various symptoms and contribute to bone loss. Prempro works by replacing these hormones. Estrogen helps reduce hot flashes and other discomforts. At the same time, medroxyprogesterone lowers the risk of endometrial hyperplasia, which can occur when estrogen is given alone to women with a uterus. Hormone replacement therapies such as Prempro are not suitable for everyone. They are usually prescribed for the shortest possible time based on individual risk factors.
